Engagement of Head - question?

Hi All,

Just been to midwife - she has written in my notes that that baby's head is engaged and has written it as 4/5.

Does this means that 4 5ths are engaged or that there are still 4 5ths to go?
Did mean to ask her but as always she was ushering me out of the door before i got chance to ask!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I thought it meant 4/5 down but am prepared to be corrected.

Fio2 · 15/06/2004 10:59

I would say 4/5 engaged (down) too

Think the way it is on the notes is the reverse of what it really is IYSWIM - so there are still 4/5ths to go. How engaged it is doesn't necessarily mean that much - I went from 3 fifths to go at 36 weeks, to 5 fifths to go at 39 weeks and an assurance that ds wouldn't be early - then ds arrived 4 days later (3 days early!!).

I think mummytosteven is right, because you count backwards and they are recording how much they can still fell above the pelvis ie. 4/5ths of head still palpable above pelvis.

Oh dear - there go all my happy feelings!
Nevermind, thought it was too good to be true

when are you due?

SpringChicken · 15/06/2004 11:53

Not for another 3 and a half weeks yet - 10th July - but was hoping for him/her to come nice and early so i don't have to put up with this heat for much longer.

Not the only pregnant woman struggling in this heat so will just have to get on with it

Definately means 4/5 of head can still be felt. Technically it is not properly engaged until it is 3/5 palpable! Still, at least it is going in the right direction
