35 weeks - glucose in urine sample

Hi all

I had a urine test at the midwife the other day, she said glucose sugar is showing up in my urine and that she is sending me for a diabetes blood test on Friday. This has really freaked me out!! I have a sweet tooth but haven't eaten any more sugar than normal!! Really worried what affect this could have on the baby and for the blood test on Friday.

Has anyone else had this happen? X

Yes, Twice! First time all came back fine, just held sugar in my wee! Haven't had results yet for second but was told I would hear by now if any problems, so assuming the same has happened this time! If the blood test shows anything, they will give you the best support and advice. Try not to worry.... Whatever happens!

I've had sugar in my urine in all my tests throughout my pregnancy. I've had 2 GTT's and a blood sugar monitor test and all showed my insulin levels to be normal.
I'm 38 weeks and I've had lots of scans for an unrelated issue and my baby is beautifully average in all aspects.
I agree with Cric, they take it very seriously and will give you lots of help depending on the test results. Take care and try not to worry x

Thanks, it is put my mind at ease. My bmi was 23 at the beginning of my pregnancy and no history of diabetes on my side of the family (although there is on my partners), plus been having regular urine samples at the midwifes and all were fine until now. I was quite surprised when she said I need to go for the test. I had had golden syrup porridge less than an hour before my urine sample so I am wondering if that made it spike... I hope so as I am so worried now! X

Golden syrup porridge may have something to do with it. Sugary drinks or food before urine tests show glycosuria

Yes, it will almost definitely be the porridge. I had glucose in a urine sample a few weeks back and the midwife said it was that the sample was taken after a sweet-ish cereal for breakfast. She asked me to make sure I gave samples before eating breakfast after that! Other breakfasts hadn't caused the same problem but I can imagine golden syrup is one that would. I did a GTT blood test and all was fine.

Fingers crossed thats the same case for me! She did ask what I had had for breakfast, but that I need to go for a test just in case. I have reigned the sugar right back since though just in case. I want to try loose the baby weight sensibly but quickly after, so it is best I am more careful anyway. Hopefully the test goes ok. Thanks for the messages x

My wife has had high glucose throughout her pregnancy (38 weeks now) all other tests have been normal. She now has to test her blood 4 times a day - all these tests have been fine, but she still continues to get glucose in her urine.

Hi Ian, was she diagnosed with gestational diabetes or do they ask her to check her blood just as a precaution? Thanks!

Never been diagnosed with it. Just advised to keep checking in case it develops

Maybe you should find out a bit about diabetes.

Whether you screen positive is nothing to do with how much sugar you eat. Gestational and type 2 diabetes both mean that your body has developed insulin resistance.

Insulin helps the body break down glucose to make energy and if you are resistant to it, you will have excess glucose in your blood and urine.

The glucose in your body is gained from eating carbohydrate - any carbohydrate. That includes refined sugar but also pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, fruit etc.

It's a shame the media is so sensationalist in its reporting of diabetes because people genuinely believe that it is only people who eat lots of sugary snacks who get it!!
