Today I've been admitted to hospital and told my baby will need to be delivered in next 24 hours due to poor growth and almost no waters. Baby is only measuring at 1lb 2oz with a less than 50% chance of survival. My husband and I are devastated and terrified. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Huge congratulations on the birth of your daughter Bea "she who brings blessings"

My niece was less than 1.5lb when born by emergency c-section and she's doing her A-levels now. It's astonishing to remember looking at her that when I first met her she would have fitted entirely into a pint glass. Delighted to hear that Bea is similarly going from strength to strength. Wishing you all the best.

Hi All, Bea still stable, got to semi hold her in her incubator. Popped my arms in and nurse places your hands round baby. She grabbed my thumb and wouldn't let go as I was rubbing her head and she was looking at me the whole time. She loves having her head rubbed.

Shutitmuppet · 20/10/2016 23:23

Baby Bea, welcome to the world and congratulations OP.

My son was born at 26+3 and he started school in Sept. It was a huge milestone as I remember the dark times in nicu where time & thinking is all you can do. Nicu is hard on the emotions and I am hoping you have some good support around you.

My advice, like others have said, is be kind to yourself. If people offer to help, take it. Let them cook a proper meal for you, help you out with bits at home - it will help.

Take pictures, Invest in a decent hand cream, stay away from goggle & take time to speak to other parents in the nicu.

Some of my closest friends now are people I met 5 years ago, we bonded over the breast pumps ☺ We laughed, cried and looked out for each other. When you take Bea home & the safety blanket of nicu is no longer there, it's invaluable to have someone to talk things through with who truly gets it.

I'm wishing you and Bea an uneventful journey through Nicu and sending you an unmumsnetty hug.

Titchypanda · 21/10/2016 09:20

Thank you shutitmuppet.

Our family's have been fantastic. They are cooking for us to make sure we eat things that are nutritious, they're helping clean and field calls etc. Basically anything that will make it easier for us when we are actually at home. We're at hospital twice a day, so not home much.

We spoke to the Bliss volunteer yesterday which helped. The thing we are struggling with is when other babies are seriously poorly and you see the pain on their parents faces, it's hard to be upbeat for your baby without feeling guilty.

Bea is stable and they are trying feeds now, so fingers crossed we can continue to be cautiously optimistic.
