Dating Scan

Hi!

I have been really nervous since finding out I'm pregnant and my dr referred me for a dating scan. I went this morning (8 w 1d) but was told to come back another day as there were 20 ppl waiting for an ultrasound and only 2 Drs trained to do them. It's an early pregnancy unit so you just turn up and can wait to be seen for a scan, check etc

Is this normal? Would you recommend a dating scan or should I just wait until week 12 now?

Normally with dating scans, you are given a set app, not asked to just turn up and wait?
The last time I had to do that was when I was 7 Weeks and they wanted to check everything was okay after I had bloody discharge (tmi).
I then had my official dating scan yesterday with an app in the antenatal clinic

Is there a reason you need a dating scan before your 12 week appointment?

I had my dating scan today by appt via the midwifery unit. Should take place but later apparently but dates suggested I might have been 12wks. Confirmed now as 8wks, so they've given me another appt for 5 wks time.
Have you spoken to the midwifery team locally?

I'm in London, at Drs apt when I told them I was pregnant she said they'd 'leave me alone now until I was 10/11 weeks' (was 5 at that point) which scared me a bit so she offered a dating scan as an interim measure I think - gave me a form to take to the early preg unit at local big hospital and said to wait until I was 8 weeks ish to get a good picture.

I think she suggested it as a way of seeing the baby and me having some kind of contact in the 5/6 weeks they'd be 'leaving me be' ! As a first timer, I'm nervous about everything so jumped at chance.

Husband wants to wait until 12 weeks but I've read a million late night google search horror stories of missed miscarriages etc and am so scared!

If your pregnancy is progressing normally then they will "leave you be" for weeks at a time. Having an early scan won't stop or prevent a mmc. Step away from google - it's going to be a long 9 months for you if you're like this now

I know, I'm just very anxious - have severe anxiety and have stopped medication due to risk to baby so everything feels heightened!

astor, I also suffer with anxiety and it is so hard, particularly in those early days. Great that your GP is supporting you with the early scan. There are medications that are safe to take for anxiety during pregnancy so I would go back to your GP and discuss some options on that front.

I think I might try to hold off until 12 weeks as it's only a few weeks away now and might be better - more to see etc?!

Hi, I conceived in late November, and didn't have my very first appointment with the midwife until February, then my first scan was later than most, the end of March. My second scan was the middle of April.
Again try not to worry

I had a 'viability scan' at just over seven weeks at a private scanning place - a babybond one I believe. I did it partly because I have a tendency towards anxiety. I was glad I did it, but I do recognise that objectively it's no 'better' then hanging on for the 12 weeks scan.
