And I have to bring my own lucozade

Today I booked my OGTT with reception at my drs. When I first saw the dr after my bfp she said I'd have to have one. The midwife also said I would. At no point did they tell me I had to book it myself, that they do it at the GPs surgery, not the hospital, that it's fasting and that I have to bring my own lucozade! I don't mind, obv, but if the receptionist hadn't mentioned it i wouldn't have known ... if the consultant hadn't checked when I was having it I wouldn't have known to book it myself.
It makes me wonder what else i could be missing.
Finally .... I'm liable to faint due to medical history - any tips from people who've had it done??

I've had three of the buggers! Be thankful they are letting you have lucozade! My first one was lucozade.... Next two were this disgusting syrup called polycal - it is really horrible. You have the blood test then you have to drink the stuff. The problem with lucozade is you have to drink it quite fast and this can be tricky with the bubbles! Then you have to do nothing for two hours...... If you are lucky they let you do this at home...... If not they make you sit in the waiting room, which is extremely tedious. Then another blood test..... Then you can finally eat! Good luck!

Take something to eat for the moment they say you can afterwards!

Oh yes, own lucozade infinitely preferable to what they could provide you with. I got some powdered stuff dissolved in not nearly enough water and I nearly puked it back up immediately!

Re the fainting, tell the person doing the test. I had mine done at the diabetic antenatal clinic the first time do I just sat in the room where the clinic took place and someone checked on me every so often. Second time round I was just at my standard ante-natal unit and I was in a wee side room by myself but someone came in and checked on me every so often. Both times I just took a book (this was just before smartphones), now I'd just download some iplayer or something else to watch. Easy peasy! Best of luck.

Is the glucose test that they do at 25 weeks ish for people who are over weight when they are pregnant etc?

It's awful, I have a dodgey heart that goes too fast when I haven't eaten or drank for a while then suddenly eat or drink. So first thing in the morning I eat and it goes upto around 170! During this time I get very breathless and feel faint, but it passes within half an hour or so but I must get onto my left side and get comfortable. So for me it's a nightmare trying to sit still in a waiting room feeling like that!!

Thanks for the info - I didn't know about the 2 hour wait. I'll bring a book as I wouldn't feel safe driving home and back.

Most places provide a disgusting drink. Dreading mine next week. I'm jealous you get lucozade!

Yes if you had it and it wasn't diagnosed it's not good

Hmm I've had 2, fainted the 2nd time. It was also roasting though so that didn't help. However mine was at the maternity hospital so they got me a bed to sit on for the rest of the 2 hrs. Try and keep cool, and distract yourself I'd say. Good luck

The fizzy lucozade was really difficult to get down within the time they tell you to drink it all. If you bring your own try to find a non fizzy one - it will make it easier to eat in one go.

I was allowed to walk out with instructions not to have anything except for water and be back at a certain time to take the second blood test - otherwise some people preferred to sit in the waiting room with a book. I also had snacks in my bag for when I got the all clear to eat after the second blood test.

Can't see it mentioned here but remember also it's only 'original' lucozade, not the orange (I always thought that was the original one but was wrong!) lol

I had mine when I was still being sick most mornings, it took a fair bit of control but just kept my mind busy on my phone and sipped water up til the appointment itself

Apple it's necessary because if it goes undiagnosed then there can be complications at the birth or problems for the baby. I think the main one is that if it is uncontrolled, the baby can be bigger than expected, so once I was diagnosed, I was put under consultant led care and was seen every two weeks plus regular growth scans to check on the size of the baby. I managed to control my blood sugars by diet but I would have been given tablets if that hadn't have worked. Everything stayed fairly normal-sized for me but I was told I wouldn't be allowed to go past my due date and I was eventually induced on my due date. Another thing to bear in mind is that you have to go back after the baby is born for another Glucose Tolerance Test to make sure everything has gone back to normal.

I'm surprised people have been allowed to go home. It was proper drilled into me that it was a resting test so had to remain seated as much as possible in the waiting area.
I had to drink a syrupy sort of drink, it was horrible but only a small amount.

As a pp said its only the original lucozade and not any alternative versions. I had to sit for two hours it's a bit dull. Oh and I had to drink it in ten minutes.
