Can I change my consultant?

I'm 15 weeks had my first appointment with a fetal medicine consultant this week, due to an existing medical condition.

I didn't like his manner - he hadn't read my notes before I came in and so got things wrong - didn't know I was on medication already (clearly in my maternity record). He also checked his phone twice and was yawning. He then suggested prescribing something else in addition, but after the appt I realised he hadn't done it and I had walked away empty handed.

I know this probably sounds silly, and these are busy people, but I just wasn't comfortable with him or particularly impressed. I don't think it was a lack of concern for my condition either, as he wants to see me again in four weeks with an additional GP appt in between, then more frequent monitoring after that.

Im willing to give him another go in a few weeks, but worried if he's awful again I'll be stuck with him by then. Is it possible to request another consultant or will that just come across as picky?

Any experience, let me know!

Hi there! Currently 22 weeks pregnant. When I found out my consultant for this pregnancy was the same from my last, I knew I wanted to change her. She tried to force me in to situations I didn't want and was basically told while in labour "do it my way or you can go home", luckily a midwife over heared and took over.

I spoke to my Midwife and she called the hospital and had my consultant changed to someone else, I love this guy he's very open and will listen to me as my other didn't (it was my first pregnancy so was a little nervous and didn't know what to do).

If your not happy with your consultant your midwife or GP can change it to someone else. My midwife told me you can change consultants at any time and you can change agin if again if I wasn't comfortable. Hopefully they you get someone who you'll love .

That's really helpful, thank you Luna! Perhaps I'll raise it with the midwife who I see next week. Don't want to be difficult, but if the person is likely delivering my baby, I'd like to feel like I trust him and he's listening!

Of course not! there will be several you can see. Simply ask to see another one!
