Advice on kidney fluid...

Hi all, I'm just looking for people who may have had a similar experience. I had my 20 week scan yesterday and baby is looking well (yay!) But the sonographer did say baby has fluid on one of the kidneys.

They don't want to rescan until 34 weeks so I'm taking that as a positive but wondered if anyone else had heard the same and what the outcome was?

I tried to ask more questions but I was only told it can be common, not to worry and it can be as simple as baby having drank fluids and not passed it straight away... trying really hard not to worry but easier said than done!

Any input would be great....thank you!

Hi hun, My best friends little boy had an issue with his kidneys which was picked up on his 20 week scan. Polycysitic kidney disorder. I will be seeing her today so I will ask what was involved, if she had a similar experience. Just to reassure you, her little boy is very happy and healthy even though one of his kidneys doesnt work. The consultant said many people may be walking round with only one kidney and not realise as years ago their mothers wouldnt have had a scan that picked it up. Im sorry if this isnt very helpfull, I just didnt want to read n run. X

After doing some research and talking to a lovely lady, I think all will be ok. Just scary when everything isn't 'perfect'!!
It's good to know we can all survive with one kidney if necessary though! Thank you

I have a friend who was born with 3 kidneys and only 1 works and he has no issues.

Also my brother was born with a pelvic kidney. It wasn't discovered until he was 24 as they didn't have scans in those days when my mum was pregnant. They have removed the pelvic one and he lives with one kidney.

I know they aren't the same issues as your baby but it shows what the human body can do and it can survive perfectly fine with one kidney.
