When did you first see MW?

Hi there, I am 6-8 weeks PG, not sure of my dates but my last period was Nov 27 (but had negative test on Jan 4). I rang docs this morning to see why MW had not contacted me for antenatal appt and they told me she would not see me until 13 weeks. But aren't I supposed to have a scan at 12? 12 week from my last period is two weeks from now. My friend said she saw MW at 8 weeks.

I saw my MW at 9 weeks but we have a 10 weeks dating scan here, not everywhere do dating scans, if your area does a 12 week dating scan then you need to see a MW at about 8-10 weeks, if your area does a 10 week dating scan then you need to see your MW at about 7-8 weeks! Best of luck!

I saw my MW at about 10 weeks, then didnt see her again for ages. But we do have 12 wk scans in this area.
HTH & best of luck to you!

Round these parts it's 8 weeks for booking in with the mw and first scan at around 10 weeks.

TheBlonde · 05/02/2007 13:58

Here they do nuchal scans - between 11 - 13+6 weeks and then you see the MW after that

GillL · 05/02/2007 14:35

I saw my midwife at 9 weeks. The dating scan is done between 10 and 12 weeks where I live.

Mumpbump · 05/02/2007 14:46

In my place, you have to see the doctor first who gives you the paperwork to get your scans sorted out with the nuchal being at around 13 weeks. After seeing the doctor, you then see the midwife any time after 8 weeks...

I am in Sefton... anyone else?

I had a 12 week dating scan and then saw the mw at 14 weeks. Round here they seem to fit you in when they can!

dassie · 05/02/2007 15:44

I was given my first appointment at 13 weeks (midwife and scan at same time). I wanted to have the scan at 12 weeks - just in case I was further along than thought and I did want all the tests.

I rang them up and said my husband was on a business trip that week and could I come a week earlier. They were fine with it.

Easch hospital seems to do things differently.

IntergalacticWalrus · 05/02/2007 15:45

I saw mine about 12 weeks, and here you don;t get a routine scan until you are 20 weeks.

BabyMadwithBump · 05/02/2007 16:36

I didn't get any paperwork for my scan, I saw my MW "first booking app" at 9 weeks and she rang the hospital while I was sat right there, she put the lady on the other end on hold, then asked me in "such and such" week what day and time is good for you? she then pasted on that info that was that scan booked!

maretta · 05/02/2007 20:57

I've had a similar problem today. I'm 10 weeks and had heard nothing. Even if you haven't seen a midwife, you should have a scan appointment.

I rang the hospital and asked to speak to the midwife. They put me through to the obs/gynae reception to confirm my scan appointment. It turned out that my referral hadn't been received from the gp. They gave me a fax number, so I rand gp again and got a copy of my referral sent accross.

BTW if your last period was Nov 27, doesn't that make you 10 weeks pregnant now - at least until a scan confirms otherwise.

nh101 · 06/02/2007 16:00

Meratta, yes that's what I thought - if I am 10 weeks (or 10 weeks from LMP) then surely I should have heard by now. The surgery just made me feel like I was wasting their time. She said "You only say the doctor the other week" (it was two weeks ago yesterday). It's hard to ring the hospital cos obviously I can't do it at work as no one here knows but I will try to ring the hospital on Thursday morning when I am not in work. Thanks

I wasnt given a scan until what (I thought was) week 13. The midwife then told me I was actually measuring week 14, and therefore it was too late to do the nuchal translucency measurement.
It would have been nice if the GP had mentioned this to me, and I would have tried to get in earlier, so at least I had the option. I had no idea about timelines like this, and I did see the GP at 7 weeks, so there was plenty of time if I'd had that kind of advice.
This was for St Marys Paddington in London which can be very impersonal - no fault of the midwives, but its like a cattle market in the waiting room.
I've now moved to Cambridgeshire where I'm far happier with the midwife and GP care.

Mumpbump · 08/02/2007 12:15

NH101 - did you call the hospital? Any joy with the scan?

nh101 · 08/02/2007 14:58

Hey, thanks for asking! I got a letter yesterday saying my appt with MW is week on Tues and scan the Tuesday after. It is so exciting!! Really annoyed at the docs receptionist though for saying I wouldn't see the MW til 13 weeks and being arsey with me. Hey ho.

In my experience, doctor's receptionists tend to be on some wierd sort of power trip!!! Never mind - at least you got your appointments... Hope the scan goes well!

PinkTulips · 09/02/2007 10:50

in the labour ward

was under combined care of gp and hospital as s the norm here. they run a midwife clinic as well but even the midwives seem to think it's a bit of a joke for some reason

nh101 · 09/02/2007 12:38

Deffo on a power trip! Although to be fair I did ring first thing Monday morning when loads of people were trying to get appointments but, still, doesn't she know I am having a baby and that is more important!!!
