Clexane injection help please!

Hi ladies,

I was wondering if there's anyone out there who can help me as, embarrassingly, I'm having trouble opening my clexane injections either a) without wasting a few drops through unsheathing the needle, b) trying to be careful and not waste any medicine and ending up pricking my finger and bending the needle, rendering it useless! I'm a completely numpty, I know, my husband says surely it can't be that difficult, but I'm clearly not very good at opening the damn thing! Injecting doesn't seem to be a problem and doesn't hurt a lot. If there's anyone who can give me some advice it would be much appreciated.

I used clexane. I just never worried about losing a couple of drops, the dose should still be sufficient.

I had some quite shocking bruising at the injection sites at the begining but did get better at doing it after a while.

I injected Clexane for about 14 weeks and found it a right faff (and I've done a lot of injecting after 7 rounds of IVF). Glad you're finding it a bit easier but don't worry about wasting a drop - it really is a miniscule amount and won't make a difference. In fact someone told me that a drop was meant to come out of the needle tip before you inject but Ive no idea whether that's accurate and I can't for the life of me remember the reason behind it!! I had them for 6 weeks post C section. Pretty sure the drops just leak out once you open them.

Are you trying to expel the air bubble in the syringe? Is that when some is wasted?

I found getting the rubber tops off the needle to be v difficult - you are not alone!

I had clexane for just over 10 months and its quite a challenge to get the tops off without spilling a drop or two. I queried it with my midwife as I was concerned about it, but she said it was fine - it wouldn't affect the dose. General tip though - if it stings, don't be tempted to rub the area when you are done - that's a recipe for some horrendous bruising (IME anyway), leave well alone. Good luck! I've bent the odd needle getting the cap off too - I've just jammed the needle in my leg anyway - it never occurred to me to throw it away. It didn't seem to make any difference injecting with a bent needle - I'm covered with bruises from my cack handed injecting as it is (been on them six months and counting).

Swift up and off. Don't expel the air. It's to help prevent the clexane sitting under your skin and causing bruises. Good luck!

Have you tried twisting rather than pulling the cap off?

Pince the rubber cap it like as if you were to pick up a worm with your thumb and index finger then a sharp pull away from the clexane Injections. They drip. They always do.

I've give about 1000 of these over my career (and not jabbed my finger once . Just think worm.)

I've been injecting clexane /fragmin twice daily for over 2 years now and I still get a few drops escaping before injecting, totally normal and relatively unavoidable!

Quick flick of the syringe sometimes necessary to get air bubble up non needle end as injecting that last ensures you don't leak it back out of the entry point, and that you get all the liquid out of the syringe.

As pp said, pull cap off directly, thumb and forefinger, minimal wiggling.. though some seem more stubborn than others!

Wow, thanks so much ladies! My technique seems to have improved the last few days (no more cack handed needle bending and pricking, lol!) I've been told to take them daily from BFP to 34 weeks, so got a long road ahead of all goes well! Thanks for all your responses, I'm laughing lots about the worm comment, MumiTravels! Xx
