Don't beat yourself up. What's done is done. When I gave up (not when I was pregnant mind you ) I used chewing gum - perhaps your midwife could help as there are often local support groups/clinics for giving up smoking.

MerryMarigold · 02/02/2007 17:02

no point in beating yourself up unless it will help you change. i have given up before, but i wasn't pregnant. it is hard, but i never had a cigarette after i decided not to. it is (mostly) in the mind, although i still get a craving every now and then 8 years later. i think that 'hooked' advertising campaign is very good 'cos it shows exactly what addiction is like (not pretty). You have to be strict on yourself and think of the baby and that you will definitely need to be a solid non-smoker after the birth as well.

maybe write down some things you find out about how smoking affects babies - somewhere you will see it and be constantly reminded so you will be put off.

sophiewd · 02/02/2007 17:04

I have quite a few friends who are doctors and in an ideal world it is better to give up smoking most say that the stress of giving up smoking is worse for the baby than smoking. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Jen call this number 0800 169 9 169 is the Pregnancy stop smoking line. They will have a natter with you and then give you your local clinic where if you want you can meet a specialist nurse who you can see or ring whenever you want for extra encouragement and will also give any prescriptions required. I'm going to my first appointment on Monday.

Don't beat yourself up hun but if you truely wish to stop this is the best way to get support IMO :D let me know how you get on xx

colditz · 02/02/2007 17:07

Have you tried patches? I know it says on the packet women can't use them if pregnant, but the Smoking Cessation Officer in my area prescribes them to pregnant women.

colditz · 02/02/2007 17:08

Get some help.

I also think the @hooked' campaign is brilliant - it is only now I don't smoke that I can see how utterly insane some of my behavior was.

Dp used to take his inhaler so he could inhale the fag, how utterly sad is that>? And I was no better!

jenjingles · 02/02/2007 17:09

thanks megandsoph are you pg at the moment? thanks for the advice i'll definitely ring that number xxx

Oh and nobody hates you.

fannyannie · 02/02/2007 17:11

jen - just want to let you know your not on your own. I'm still smoking and and I'm 22 weeks pg. I do want to stop, and I know this sounds like a pathetically weak and feeble excuse, but with all the cr*p going on in my life at the moment I'm not sure I can......and if I did DH's brandy and vodka bottles (complete with lots of lovely mixers) would probably be an even greater temptation.

I know I should quit - but as awful as it sounds I'm not sure I can actually put myself through the stress of it ATM

jenjingles · 02/02/2007 17:14

fannyannie- bless your heart i know exactly what you are feeling and your,e right its so hard and yes you do feel so so guilty, i'm right with you girl maybe we could support each other??!!

I think what makes it worse is that I cut right down and then quit completely when I was 3 1/2 months pg with DS1. And with DS2 apart from 2 the day after I found out I was pg (he was unplanned) and half a box after a MASSIVE bust-up with DH mid-pg I didn't smoke at all. Now here I am pg with DC3 (unplanned again) and I just can't seem to find the motivation atm to quit.

jenjingles · 02/02/2007 17:20

the same happened to me with ds and dd and this is my third {unplanned but wonderful} and i have no problem once the dc is here and i'm breastfeeding so whats wrong with not being able to do it now aaarrrrgggghhh!!

Jen yep am pg and feel exactally the same as you. I have tried to quit so many times and have ended up becoming a horrible person during the time and this has been stopping me. I can't wait to just go for it but petrified of the feelings to come and the thought of failing again.

twoplusone · 02/02/2007 17:33

Fannyannie- I am the same as you
Alot going on at the moment, I know its not an excuse.. but I really cant face trying to give up I have cut right down though, still not good enough..........
