4 week scan and no baby visable after taking morning after pill?!?!

I took the morning after pill because we decided to wait a little longer between baby 2 and 3 but it turned out that my period didn't come! The doc said perfectly easy to happen - its only 84% proof! But then she said that it might be that the baby is not there but the sack is there which is producing the hormones to set off the pregnancy test. Panicked and didn't want to wait two to four weeks for a scan, so had a private one (so expensive!) and he said that there was nothing there which could mean three things, one I was about to miscarry, two it was just too early to see it and three, it is ectopic! Great - two bads and one good! So now have had one blood test, the other tomorrow to find out what the HCG levels are up to, but I am so worried. Now that I know I am pregnant, I am so excited about it, and I don't want to have the other things happen. Does anyone know whether or not the doctor was seriously telling the truth and that the baby can definately be too small to see on a 4 week scan or was he just being nice and I am actually either going to miscarry or have a missed miscarry or an ectopic pregnancy? I have to wait till Monday to find out the tests from the blood (NHS!) and I'm going mad already. I am feeling absolutely fine, no symptoms, but I wouldn't now anyway coz its so early but I do have mild cramps every now and then (on going for four days now), not strong, almost feels like its stretching (had same with number 2). All so scary, please can someone issue advice with some confort or otherwise? Thank you so much.

Have no medical knowledge myself but I had a scan at 6wks to rule out ectopic and we could clearly see the heart beat - it was only a small black blob but pulsating. Not sure how much a foetus grows between 4 and 6 wks and whether it would make much difference in relation to seeing it on scans.

Hope you get good news next week.

I've had a scan at 5 weeks and you could quite clearly see something and that was some time ago and technology has changed. Having said that, it is still very early for a scan. How many pg tests did you do?

FurryFox · 01/02/2007 22:10

Don't know much about scans I'm afraid but bumping this for you in case someone else does. Good luck.

Do you know you are pregnant? Have you done a test? If you have, and it was postive, your scan was very, very early. If you are testing positive I would say it was pretty normal at four weeks to see nothing.

I had a scan to check for ectopic at 4 weeks that couldn't see anything in my womb but could see a mass either on my ovary or in my fallopian tube was advised to have an operation to remove it, I refused the potential ectopic is now 20 months old and fast asleep. They found the sac at 5 weeks but didn't confirm it as a viable pregnancy until 7 weeks. So I think there is a good chance for you. 4 weeks is really too early to be definate about things. Did you have an internal scan?

Yes, it is perfectly plausable for nothing to show up on a scan at four weeks. You have to remember that the pregnancy would only actually be 2 weeks along because 4 weeks just means it's been that long since your last period - it's just the weird and out dated way they date pregnancy. Normally you would ovulate 14 days into your cycle, so if you are pregnant the embryo would only be 2 weeks old in reality. There would be nothing to show on a scan this early on. I went for a scan at 5 weeks (thinking I was 6 weeks based on my last period, but I later found out I wasn't that far along) to try to determine where the bleeding I was experiencing was coming from. The scan wasn't conclusive b/c it didnt show any source of blood and all that showed up was a gestational sac, no heart beat, no embryo, nothing but a sac. Of course the obstetrician could not tell me whether I'd miscarry or not at this point which was incredibley stressful. However, I had to go back for a scan at 6 weeks and 4 days and this time there was this little flickering creature with a strong heart beat which was so amazing. Anyway, my point is that at four weeks there will be nothing to show, the embryo would be the size of the full stop at the end of this sentence. Even at 5 weeks they can't see a whole lot. You really will not know until 6 + weeks what's going on. It's so suspenseful having to wait a couple weeks more but there's no way around this. I hope it all works out! I wish you luck with it all!

princesschris · 03/02/2007 23:38

Sorry its been so long since I wrote on this thread. Things have gone from varying stages of bad to worse with the NHS doing a serious job of messing it all up. I have a new thread running in Ante-natal about HCG levels if anyone is interested in what happened next! Still don't know anything much, but should find out tomorrow as they want to scan me asap incase its ectopic! Princesschris, I am now, today 6 weeks - if I am at all pregnant which is all rather under debate at the moment. At what stage are you at and how are you going now?

Its all over, had scan, the baby isn't even there, its just a sack. My fault for taking the morning after pill, won't do that again! Huge hormonal time coming whilst I wait for it to come out, but at least it wasnt' actually a baby, just the sack. Good luck with yours, so pleased for you.
