Fluid around baby's heart and lungs not developing

I was told there was fluid around my baby's heart when I was 12 weeks and was sent to a specialist. The fetal dr told me there was a large amount of fluid around the heart and was causing the baby's lungs not to develop and it could be caused by a chromosome abnormality. I am currently 14 weeks pg, but the baby is now measuring at 16 weeks. The dr told me if I went full term the baby had no chance at surviving and I should consider terminating the pregnancy. Has anyone gone through this? Is there any hope that anything will change or should I highly consider my options? Please respond asap.

I haven't been in your position, although have friends who have (in their case it was a non-genetic development issue picked up at the 20 week scan). I didn't want to leave your post unanswered.

Hi Tabz. I am so sorry you have had this devastating news. I lost a twin earlier this year to a chromosomal issue so understand the way you are feeling right now.

When I got my diagnosis I thought the only thing I could do was to get a second opinion so travelled up to London to see professor Nicolaides on Harley st. He is the top fetal medicine expert in the world. It cost £220 and helped me to make the best decision possible given the circumstances.

I then felt that I had done everything I could for my baby.

I'm really sorry that you are dealing with this. I don't know anything about fluid around the heart and lungs but did have a baby with trisomy 13. a significant chromosomal abnormality. We were told in no uncertain terms that our baby was 'incompatible with life' and encouraged to end the pregnancy. This isn't necessarily the case and sadly the nhs are very quick to push people down this route. My advice would be to do your own research, don't take anything you are told at face value. Good luck.
