So much saliva??

Last night I woke up at maybe 3 a.m with so much saliva I was gagging on it and had to spit it out. It was really thick and warm and there was just so much. This has never happened before, and today I am producing more or less a normal ammount but it was sorta scary

When I'm pregnant I produce lots more saliva, but only when I'm asleep! I actually wake myself up with the amount of wet I have dribbled on me/the pillow (gross I know, sorry!) really don't know why?!

I'm the same. It actually has a name: ptyalism. I don't know why but that made me feel (very slightly) better about it that it's a "thing". Often seems to go along with nausea - have you had that too?

I've sorta had nausea but it's not how I expected it to be. Everyday I always feel a bit "sea sick" but last night before bed my belly felt really heavy and I could almost feel it in my throat but I wasn't actually being sick and I couldn't sleep and when I finally did sleep I got woken up by my saliva

It's so weird isn't it? Everybody gets different symptoms but I think these are in the range of normal. Not sure if there is much you can do - maybe sleeping on your side and/or with a towel on your pillow might help?

I am a spitter too I had this in first pregnancy with HG and the spitting didn't go until I gave birth! I have it again and because of this I am too embrassed to go outside ! What does work for me to reduce the saliva is pumpkin sees or almonds if u chew them and keep them in the side of the mouth it does help but after a week I got sick of it

I have this all day long I had it in my last pg (lost baby at 17 weeks but was still spitting 3 months later due to pg hormones still being present due to retained products) and in this pregnancy (currently 17 weeks)

Last time i was on bed rest due to HG and I was filling several carrier bags with tissues that I had no option but to spit into every day. It was totally gross! It's a lot more manageable this time, this isn't a HG pregnancy, but still a pain...

The thing that aggrevates it most, for me, is anything sweet. The only thing I can drink that actually refreshes my mouth instead of exacerbating the excess saliva/horrid taste is ice cold sparkling water

I've found spicy food makes it a billion times worse

OMG having kittens I find sweet things make it worse too! I hate it so much and I am really not enjoying being pregnant it feels really unfair to have this

It's called dysgeusia when nothing tastes 'right' in pregnancy. I'm finding milk tastes sour too so I'm probably lacking in calcium atm and citrus things dry up my mouth but leave a horrible, sour coating on my tongue

Although I didn't have the excess saliva when I was pg first time, with DD, I did still had the dysgeusia all the way through - nothing tasted right for 8 months I have such a sweet tooth usually but everything tasted so sour and yucky

The only thing keeping me going is the memory of that first meal I could actually properly taste and enjoy after I delivered DD - I think I inhaled it! It was gone in seconds, it tasted sooo good

I'd forgotten about this! In my first pregnancy I regularly soke up with a wet patch in my pillow.

I'm 31 weeks and have had excessive saliva since 10 weeks. It's gross and embarrassing, and alongside HG has probably contributed most to my low mood during this pregnancy. I carry a bottle everywhere with me to spit into as cloths/tissues just aren't up to the job. Needless to say I cannot wait to give birth to this baby! Sympathies to everyone experiencing this.

I noticed this during my first pregnancy..... Almost as if all your body fluids go into overdrive!

My second is two months now and I still spray people when I talk. Its very attractive.

I had this too! Mine was disgusting and I had to sit with a cup to spit into all day I was off with severe sickness and the excess saliva stopped after about 4 weeks. Yuck!

I used to keep an abundance of disposable plastic cups beside my bed when I had HG last time. The smell emanating from the fluid in the cup was not pleasant - which only made me vomit more - bleugh!

I'm a delight!

And my midwife was shocked that I am so adamant that this will be my last pregnancy - er, hello?!

This is my second pregnancy and I feel like I've had every time symptom under the sun. I actually sat down and made a list today and listed everything I've experiencing (I'm only 11 weeks) and there are 11 different things on the list that I'm all experiencing at one time. The worst? Nausea, throwing up and constant salivating, constantly spitting into tissues at home, when I'm out shopping, when I'm anywhere. It's depressing, this pregnancy is depressing me, oh and the horrible after taste in my mouth that I get after I eat or drink anything! I'm so fed up and it's really getting me down, I even cried last night because a new symptom has joined the list, constant headaches :)

I know this is an old thread but up at 4:30am dealing with excess saliva, can't sleep, feeling so sorry for myself. I don't have HG and am no longer nauseous, I'm 19 weeks and nausea stopped at 16 weeks. Soon after this the excess saliva began! It is on and off and seems worse when I am thinking about it so makes me worried it is psychological too. If I'm distracted by work or something else it isn't so bad or doesn't bother me as much. It's a very anxious time in the world and it seems my body is just dealing with it very weirdly. I hate it because it seems to be a symptom of pregnancy, albeit rare, but I'm also doubting myself too and wondering if it's really a physical thing... It's just so shitty I don't know what to do, if I swallow it i also swallow excess air then get wind. So I have to spit it out constantly. OH could sleep coz of my weird mouth noises so I've come downstairs. I don't even know what the point of this post is but feeling very low about it. Also haven't slept well for three nights now and just feel so tired.

Pregnancy is rubbish isn’t it?

I had the excess saliva constantly for the first 16 weeks - thin watery saliva like you get when you’re about to throw up. It’s eased off now, but evolved into me dribbling thick, gross saliva in my sleep. I literally produce puddles of it, it’s so disgusting!

Just wanted to let you know you’re not alone and you’re not imagining it!

Oh thank you for your message @Nelbert19. How many weeks are you now? It's nice to know I'm not alone. 💕 I feel so low about it right now, I'm sure the lack of sleep doesn't help :(
It's weird coz I didn't have it when I was nauseous and vommitting ffrom week 6-16, but it started soon after. One of the worst things is how there seems to be air bubbles in it so if I try to swallow I swallow air and then have burpy wind. It's so hard to just forget about it.

Pregnancy is hard. Always thought I would be one of the people who liked it 😂 definitely am not one of those people.

I’m 23 weeks now and also have not been enjoying it as I thought I would! I had hyperemesis up until 16 weeks and weekly monster migraines until 20 weeks, so I’ve mostly just felt horrendous and hated it!

Symptoms have eased now, with just annoying ‘normal’ ones like aching hips, poor sleep, constant peeing and this saliva! Thank god im working from home!

I have started to enjoy it over the past 2 weeks - I’ve got a nice bump, we found out the sex of the baby and the kicks are developing into a pattern, so feel like I’m actually starting to get to know our baby boy. It helps that I’m feeling far more human!

Hopefully you’ll feel the same later in your pregnancy, but you’re definitely not the only one having a rubbish time! Not quite the glowy Earth mother I thought I’d transform into 🙄

@Nelbert19 Good to hear you are starting to enjoy it more! I had about a week of loving it, once the nausea and vomitting stopped, but now this saliva thing is getting to me. I just need to have faith it will end soon. Fingers crossed!
We found out baby's sex too, we are having a girl :) very excited and it's so nice knowing isn't it. Makes it all the more real
