Reasons to give for not drinking alcohol?

Hi Ladies

I took a pregnancy test on Monday after my period was late by only two days. It came back positive but I know it is still very early days. I'm meeting up with friends later for drinks and I would normally have a few glasses of wine. I know people will be quizzing me about why I'm not drinking - what do I say? I'm thinking of saying I'm taking antibiotics but I've got a few more social events coming up on Saturday and Sunday. Could you legitimately be taking antibiotics for almost week?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe I'm just not very inquisitive!

I've known just by some small clue and a guy instinct when loads of my friends and colleagues have been pregnant. Sometimes they look a tiny bit different (flushed skin, rounder face, shirts suddenly straining at the buttons, that sort of thing), or they suddenly start having a mid morning biscuit where they never did before. Or they suddenly read the ingredients list of something when they never have before. Tiny little things. But I don't think I've ever known someone to announce a pregnancy and for people to not have already known. It's usually fairly obvious but not solely because of alcohol, which is why I never understand the alcohol angst.

That should say a gut instinct!

If you need to bolster the antibiotic story, invent a dental abscess. Dentists give you metronidazole, which you really can't drink with. My last course of that was a week long, and they make you feel like shit, like early pregnancy.

There's a Dry September thing coming up, Dryathlon maybe, so if you can get through the next week, you could say you're doing that afterwards. I got away with the first few weeks by giving it up for Lent (genuinely, had done so before finding out I was pregnant.)
