Is there a Nasal bone?

Can anyone see a nasal bone? Had a screening test to see if it could have a syndrome, but results don't come until next week. I've read and found out that the nasal bone missing could be a sign. Is anyone experienced and can tell? Photo is not good as baby was upside down and the sonographer struggled to get a good angle.

I'm not at expert so I can't help with seeing whether there is a bone on the image.

However I do know that the nasal bone is utterly tiny when they are this little and just because someone can't see it doesn't mean its not there (IYSWIM).

They couldn't find a nasal bone on my 12 week scan with my first baby. At that stage it was a 'soft marker' for Downs syndrome.

In reality I was 11+3 and it was just a bit too early for them to see it.

Doesn't it say in your scan notes? Mine definitely did.

I'm 13+3 so probably still won't be that clear yet.

No, nothing in my notes. However they told me the scan looked normal, and baby was very active. Maybe I'm worrying more than I should be, it is my first baby.

Did you just have the standard screening tests? I know it must be hard waiting for the results but please don't worry. Chances are everything is fine.

In my hospital they give you the results within the hour - I'm so grateful for that!

The image the sonographer took to do the nuchal measurement on should have had he nasal bone on. This image is not a screening image and is not truely in line to see a nasal bone.
(It also depends what ethnicity you are. Some Oriental type do not have a nasal bone)

Yes, I wasn't told I should have one unlike mum who was 42 when she had my youngest brother. I asked if I could, so the chances are probably slim. Still so desparate to know everything is fine.

I thought I was getting my results today as well as we waiting for a while after. Turns out it was just a talk with the doctor I was waiting for. Lucky you!!!

I only had a blood test for the screening

Sonographers study for years to become qualified for their job. They are much better placed to tell you whether there is something to worry about than us laypersons. I can understand you're anxious but honestly, unless the sonographer is worried, you don't need to be.

I know, I wish I would of asked more about it now! They seemed happy with the scan so I need to stop worrying. I'm a very anxious person..

I believe what they do is take measurements (the nuchal fold is one of them - back of the neck I think this is). They will have done that whilst scanning you. Then they take a blood test. They put the scan measurements and review them together with your bloods. From this result they can determine liklihood of your baby having any conditions such as downs syndrome and some others (Edwards is one I think, I can't recall the other name, sorry!).

If the chances are high then they will offer you additional screening.

But you don't need to worry about that now, just try not to think about it and wait for your initial results. As I said, chances are it will all be fine.

Honestly, the chances of anything being wrong are very small. I'm a worrier too so I can totally empathise but the best thing to do is wait for your official risk score to come back. Enjoy your pregnancy and keep looking at that photo - it's a lovely
clear picture for 13 weeks :)

They would have told you if there was no nasal bone.

OP - having been in your position it's hard not to analyse the scan pictures after a worrying screening scan. I had a raised NT of 4.2mm and was checking everything for myself on the scan pictures. At the end of the day the ultrasound is a dynamic scan (required a lot of movement) to interpret and the screen shots you get are trying to capture dynamic pictures. Trust what you've been told if they said everything was ok - although I wasn't told much in my NHS scan as my radiographer stayed silent the whole time and then told me she wasnt happy. She kept showing me there was a heartbeat as reassurement but wouldn't discuss anything further. This must have been the way she was as an individual. I actually booked for a private scan and NIFTY that evening which was far more reassuring and satisfied my curiosity about the anatomy which is what the first radiographer could have done as it was entirely normal and the NT was actually not that big (although indeed raised).

Op. On your scan report there may be two letters that say N.T and a number e.g 2.1mm this will be the measurement. (Depending on their reporting system is will be mid page, on the left) You will have had the Combined Screening today if you are 13+3. The gestational age of your baby is too young to have just blood test screening (quadruple test)
If they were worried about the size of measurement they would have told you today and referred you to a fetal medicine specialist. They haven't so the measurement would have been with normal limits. (The bit we measure is the nuchal transluceny at the back of the neck) this disappears after a certain stage and the other screening test kicks in.
The nuchal fold is looked at during the 20 week scan and only measured if a problem, you don't need to worry about this as not an issue at this stage.

I've found it in my notes!! The measurement was 2.0mm. Is this normal?

The size was 72.8mm

2.0 is well within the normal range, which goes up to 3.5 I believe. Mine was 2.3 with DS. However it doesn't mean much on its own - they combine it with your blood test to get your risk score. You should get a call within 3 days of the bloods being taken if you're high risk (the threshold is anything more than 1:150 I think). At least that's how it works in my area.

To give to an idea of the risk scoring, my NT was 1.8mm this time and my risk came back as 1:5800.

Prettypinklady that's a good measurement within normal limits. It rules out cystic hygromas and we know your baby is less likely to have any heart problems. alls good.
