We were really set on Ethan Samuel (and dh still is),but I'm also liking Elijah Samuel and think I prefer it.
We already have one Ds who is Oscar James.

Please help me decide-which do you prefer?

i love biblical names -ds is a noah so elijah

ProfYaffle · 27/01/2007 09:43

I'm currently pg with dd2, if she'd been a boy we were going to go for Elijah, it's a family name for me (well, Eli is but I don't like that) I really like it. Ethan is getting too common these days.

gegs73 · 27/01/2007 10:08

Elijah and you have given me an idea for my ds2 when he arrives. I have an Oscar too

Bubbaloo · 27/01/2007 10:46

Yay...and an Oscar aswell,Gegs.

Definately couldn't have Roger,Wotzaname for the same reason we couldn't have Buck or Roy.

These two names on our lists for boys too!

Also to go with Samuel (DH's name - family tradition)

At the moment, preferring Elijah!

belgo · 27/01/2007 11:02

Elijah Samual is nice. What about Izaac Samual?

tiredemma · 27/01/2007 11:03

Elijah.

Love it, especially if your other son is Oscar, the names sound good together.

foxymagoo · 27/01/2007 11:06

My ds is Isaac James and we have had loads of compliements on the it (my middle name is McIsaac after my Dad's Mum's maiden surname...).

I like Ethan too and always think of thirtysomething when I hear it.

tron · 27/01/2007 11:18

My DS is Ewan,
Ethan is getting quite common here too, Elijah is quirky but cool, and you won't get stuck with 6 elijahs is the same class at school

thelittlestboho · 27/01/2007 12:45

Reuben's a nice one, as is Noah.

pinktulips - true!!!
Do you shorten to Cal? Dont norm shorten names but did not mind that?

largeginandtonic · 27/01/2007 13:02

Elijah, i love it! I have 4 ds Samuel Joseph, Jacob Henry, Jonah James and Hugo Rafferty Peter, ds# 6 due in May and not a clue what to call him!! I also have a dd Seraphim Tabitha, im not biblical at all believe it or not!!

tortoiseSHELL · 27/01/2007 13:05

I think I prefer Elijah as a name, but I think Ethan goes better with Oscar.

tortoiseSHELL · 27/01/2007 13:11

Meanings -

Elijah - Jehovah is God
Ethan - Strong/firm

Both Hebrew origin

Samuel - asked of God - again Hebrew origin. The El is the God bit, hence El-i-jah's meaning (jah being Jehovah)

Oscar - Divine Strength - Scandinavian origin
James - derived from Jacob, meaning 'one who supplants'

So it would be quite neat to use Ethan, as both Ethan and Oscar mean strong!

Don't know if you're into meanings or not, but I think they're quite important. These all have lovely meanings so you can't go wrong!

Ladymuck · 27/01/2007 13:25

I would point out that Ethan is also a biblical name, though he was a far less prominent character in the Old Testament.

The only other observation that I would make (being located in South London) is that the only Ethans that I know are white, and the only Elijahs I know are black. No idea whether that is just a local trait.

Fillyjonk · 27/01/2007 13:29

elijah

reuben is really getting common round here, loads of them

Miaou · 27/01/2007 13:35

Ethan

But it's a close run thing... both are lovely

Bubbaloo · 27/01/2007 15:07

Thanks everyone.

TortoiseSHELL-Thats very interesting, seeing the names written down like that, next to each other.

Think I'm still a bit undecided though.

There's an Etham at DD's nursery. I don't know if the parents or the nursery staff have mispelled it.

Ladymuck · 27/01/2007 16:11

Yes, it was one of the thing that I liked about both of the names - that there wasn't that much scope for errors in spelling.

calebsmummy · 27/01/2007 16:13

Elijah, definately. I would have named DS3 Elijah but my cousin got there first!

Pinktulips, DS2 is Caleb and it is indeed a very cool and fab name! We wron pronounciations and misspellings all the time and like you say, I don't know why as it is a fairly simple name to spell and pronounce!

calebsmummy · 27/01/2007 16:15

That obviously should be we get wrong pronounciations........

auntymandy · 27/01/2007 16:17

ethan
