A bit concerned about protein found in urine today?

I went for a consultant check up this afternoon and was told there was protein in my urine & that was all. I wasn't told why or how it could of got in there or what they were going to do about it (if there is anything they can do).

I'm currently 22 weeks PG with 3rd baby and haven't experienced this before. Anyone have any ideas what can cause it?? Or is there anything I can do to change it?

TIA

is your BP ok ? and any swelling ?

a trace of protein can be if a sample gets contaminated by , say, discharge,....and unless it recurs with raised BP & swelling, it is often nothing to worry about

if it is there with those other sypmtoms, can indicate pre eclampsia

if it is a one off and just a trace, it is probably nothing, i would call the midwife if you are worried though !

Thanks lulu

BP was 100/60 so pretty low I think?

and nothing really swelling apart from my behind and tum lol, So hopefully it will be a one off thing

that sounds ok BP wise..i imagine if nothing was said by the midwife, you are ok....

obviously if you start to have swelling, feel ill, bad headaches, visual disturbances, get checked asap !

Will do thanks again hun

Your BP does sound OK, as does the fact that you haven't got any other symptoms (swelling, visual disturbances, headaches). As far as I'm aware 22wks would be a touch early for pre-eclampsia symptoms to start anyway.
Did they ask you for another sample to send off to the lab, because not only could it be a bit of contamination for discharge as lulumama said, it could also be an early sign of an infection. Have you got any signs of a UTI at all, frequency, stinging, burning,...

No BM the midwife just said "you have protein in your sample" and that was it.

Since around 10 weeks I started suffering from bad headaches but I don't think thats relevant to this as the urine tested during booking in and 16 week apointment were clear.

I have been having every now and then achey pains around the kidney area, since around 12 weeks but that seems to of eased for now and have no other symptoms of urine infection. Think I will start drinking cranberry juice just incase, like you say it is the begining of one.

Thanks Belgian

No probs. Have yourself checked out though if you have any of the previously described symptoms, especially if they persist. Pre-eclampsia is a serious condition as you probably know and UTI's in pregnancy are known to be one of the major causes of premature labour and so do need to be treated with antibiotics.
Drinking cranberry juice is a good idea. It's a good way to keep UTI's at bay and its full of Vit C as well.

Went to GP today explained what I was told yesterday. He is sending of a urine sample to check for infection

Really am not happy with the anti-natal care here wish I was back in Southampton where they looked after you. Ho Humm.

I'm 29 weeks pregnant with my first and was told last week by the midwife that ive got protein and lucosites in my urine. have had protein show up in my sample twice before but never heard of lucosites?. bp was 140/72, midwife sending sample to be tested.what could this mean?hmm

lulumama · 28/01/2007 13:03

leukocytes..think that is when the sample has been contaminated with discharge.......might be wrong !

lulumama · 28/01/2007 13:04

might indicate UTI....

sazzybee · 28/01/2007 13:44

I had protein in my urine and leucocytes (sp?) when I had a check up at my GP's the other week. And then less than a week later, I had an appt to see the consultant - no protein.

They didn't seem remotely concerned so I'm not worrying. This could be because there have been so many things that have been concerning them in this pregnancy that I haven't got the energy to worry about anything that isn't worrying the doctors
