Telling the kids!

When did you tell your other children you were expecting? Just curious....

I'm expecting baby number 3, with my new partner. We both have a couple of children each from previous marriages. They are 4,6 and 11 (his others are grown up) - they will be 5, 7 and 12 when the baby arrives

I am almost 8 weeks, we are having an early scan today. I'm worried about telling them before the 12 week scan in case the worst happens and we lose the baby (although all positive signs so far and hoping to see a heartbeat later!) and have to explain that to them, which wouldn't be nice!!

I told DS after the 12 week scan. He's only 2 though so doesn't really understand though he does sing to my tummy.

My kids are 10 and 12.

We told them after the 8 week scan because the 10 year old was getting very nervous that I was so sick and going to bed before him. He kept asking me what was wrong and getting a bit anxious. The 12 year old was oblivious. I was also feeling like I was keeping something really important from them, and I like to be as honest and open as I can be.

They took it well! I think the 10 year old was a bit quiet about it at first. The downside was the 12 year old went and told all his friends after about 2 weeks, and we live in a small town so word was out a bit before I was ready.

We told our ds's after our 20 week scan. I had mild-ish nausea/ exhaustion and I wanted to wait until I felt better as I didn't want them to think baby= mum sick, horrible baby.

We told my step kids when I was about 15 weeks as we were going on holiday & I had a visible bump in my swimming cosie! We had planned on waiting until the 20 week scan as it's an awfully long time for children to wait & we wanted to be as confident as we could that we were having a healthy pregnancy. Congrats btw!

I told ds about 8 weeks but we said we would try to grow a baby so be gentle and also I was so sick he needed to know to give me a break. I would have said something along the lines of there's no baby yet as we would have we kept trying. My niece who's 9 I told at the same time but was more honest with her told her that sometimes babies don't grow and we would have to wait to see if it was able to grow helpfully. Until 12 weeks we tried not to mention it much or talk about the future with the baby around them, once we got to 20 weeks we found out the sex and started to talk about baby brother ds is already in love with his brother and building a toy stash from old toys and even using his pocket money to buy his brother toys. Its worked well.

We told DD the same day I had my 12week scan (waited til we knew everything was ok)

I had extra scans with DS (DD had been a small baby) so took her along to scans and some of the midwife appointments. She loved being involved and helped to buy stuff for her baby brother. She turned 3 in the August and DS arrived November.

DH and I just discussed this morning when to tell DD who is 5 in a few weeks and have decided to wait till the 12week scan again. I think if we told her and I miscarried, it would be hard to explain to her.

Yes those are my worries, having to explain if something did go wrong, and risk the being upset about it. I'm dying to tell them though!!

My dh is dying to tell her but I've made him promise to wait! He did ask how she would feel if her brother shared a room with her

I'm almost 14wks expecting no.6. Haven't told mine yet. I'm actually dreading it. Ex partner to 1st 3 DC is wanting custody of my son ( I honestly don't know why, my eldest DD lives with ex) so in a very stressful situation right now, so I know as soon as I tell my 2 at home from my ex my son will tell his dad, and im worried that having a new baby will go in ex's favour once it goes to court. I'm a bloody good mummy. It's taken the joy out of this pregnancy.
My DD 11 is starting to ask questions though so I guess she's starting to twig i'm preggy.
