I think GPs tend to be a bit hit and miss when it comes to finding heartbeats as its not their speciality area.

I know the GP I had when I was pregnant with DD could never find the heartbeat but she always warned me beforehand that she always had problems and not to be worried.

So please try not to worry.

ShowOfHands · 23/01/2007 16:26

Midwives here won't even attempt to hear the heartbeat until 16weeks as it can be so hit and miss before then.

I first heard it at 12weeks, but then could only find it intermittently with my own doppler until 16weeks when it was pretty easy.

7 weeks with number 2! The midwife was convinced i must be nearer 12 weeks (and I was hoping!) but scan confirmed she was only 7wks!

sunita123 · 23/01/2007 16:27

DS: 12Wks
DD: 16Wks

Don't worry tis early days yet.

lulumama · 23/01/2007 16:29

16 weeks...that is the earliest that i recall

before that ,the uterus can be too far down in the pelvis to hear anything..

also as has been said, GPs can sometimes strugle more as they don;t do this as often as midwives...try not to worry x

soph28 · 23/01/2007 16:30

sorry just read OP again and realised that wasn't very reassuring but I did go to midwife at around 17/18 weeks maybe more and she took absolutely ages to find a heartbeat- like 15 minutes or something. Don't worry, sometimes they just tuck themselves away and it's so hard to find the correct position and sometimes they're just wriggling around so much.

SachaF · 23/01/2007 16:37

16 weeks, as that was my first midwife appt. Doc didn't try to listen to it at 12 weeks.

SachaF · 23/01/2007 16:39

Oh, and when doc tried to listen at end of 2nd trimester he struggled and only got a few seconds before my son kicked him and moved away!

twoplusone · 23/01/2007 17:06

Thank you all.. feel a it more relaxed reading that...
