GD at 12 weeks

I'm 12 weeks pregnant with my second baby. With DS I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks. Despite being very strict with the diet, I ended up on metformin, then insulin and had an induction at 38 weeks. DS was in NICU for a few days for low blood sugar which I know wasn't that long compared to a lot of other babies but was still difficult and upsetting.
Anyway, because I've had it before, I was sent for a GTT yesterday. Got a call with the results this morning and I've got GD already.
I'm so worried that having it for so long this time means it's going to harm the baby even more. I was already taking metformin for PCOS and will adjust my diet. I'm just quite scared and could use some reassurance. Has anyone else been diagnosed this early? How did things work out?

I was diagnosed at 14 weeks with my daughter but stayed on diet control.
She was an elcs at 39 weeks as she was breach.
Just know that because of this you will be highly monitored and have excellent care.
You will have far more care and reassurance than most people.
It helped my immensely having regular scans and appointments.
Maybe try and look at it from this perspective.

Thanks! You're right, it is positive that I'll get more monitoring. It just seems like such a long and worrying road ahead. I keep thinking about the things I'll not have but I should just be focusing on keeping my baby healthy. Even though I've had it before, it still feels very overwhelming.

You've done it once and it's easier the 2nd time around.
Plus you have more time to get used to the diet you need to follow.
On the plus side it means by following the diet you're healthier at the end, you don't 'eat for two' and feel better for it.

Yes I did too. Ended up lighter at birth than I was at booking! I just stuck to safe meals last time. It was very boring but it was only for 10 weeks. I think I'll need to be more inventive with food this time around as 6 months is a long time to eat the same stuff over and over again. I'm vegetarian and have loads of food aversions at the moment though so not easy. All I want to eat are plain white carbs, obviously that's out now!

Yeah, Magpie, I'm in similar boat. Been diet controlling since found out I was pregnant (so difficult when you feel sick) then significant symptoms from 16 weeks so been on insulin since 17 weeks. Now 28 weeks and worrying too. Due growth scan this week but worried as diabetes going to be going on much longer this time (maybe 8 weeks last time?). On bright side, coping with it better...kinda...DH been really supportive re food and we have changed our diet to accommodate.

It helps having a supportive DH. Mine stuck to the diet with me last time. Not sure he'll manage it for 6 months though.
I'm finding it extra stressful at the moment because I don't have a monitoring equipment yet (seeing the diabetic midwife on Wednesday). I've been very strict with what I'm eating but I get a particular type of nausea, which I remember from last time which I'm convinced means my sugar is high

Magpie, I was diagnosed at booking in appointment at 8 weeks and have been dealing with it since then, 27 weeks now. Am on Metformin three per day but have a feeling will be on insulin before the end. DH has been very supportive although he did sit and eat a Turkish delight in front of me last night....! Good luck, it's doable but I have found it a struggle, and have the same concerns as you regarding how early it's been picked up. There is another thread about GD -is there a gestational diabetes thread that's quite recent too.
