Hi,

We already have a little girl and I'm now pregnant again we had a surprise with her and were aiming for a surprise with this one, however, we went for our 20 week scan on Thursday and I had a second scan with a consultant due to complications the last time. The consultant said 'do you know what you're having?' Then followed it very quickly with 'Look away now as it's got it's legs wide open' unfortunately I was looking directly at the screen and I'm almost certain I caught glance of a penis and possibly even the scrotum I feel totally gutted, I REALLY didn't want to know and can't stop thinking about it now. Basically, what I'm asking is does anyone think there's anyway I could have been mistaken?! Oh and I should mention, it looked like it was a potty shot

People often mistake the umbilical cord for the penis!!

As pp said....umbilical cord can easily been mistaken for a penis by an untrained eye! Before the sonographer told us Dd was a girl, I though I had seen a penis. I was very much mistaken and felt like a right nob when the lady said that it was the umbilical cord!

Thank you for replying! I thought I saw a little willy with my little girl but was obviously very wrong! But as this was a potty shot I feel like I know now

I thought I saw a girl on my scan. (I can do basic ultrasound so thought I could see what was what). I was wrong. Clearly not as good as I thought!

The question is whether you confirm it, or leave the uncertainty.

Haha, oops! I don't want to confirm it but it's just playing on my mind so much, but I haven't even told my husband! I'm too upset too, that's why I had to share in here! Thanks for your input xx

My cousin got told she was having a boy. She had a girl. Even trained people get it wrong

My sister was convinced she saw boy's bits on her 20 week scan, she had a girl

I had my nails done the other day by someone who was told by the sonographer at the 20 week scan they were having a boy.... they gave birth to a girl.

Ah thank you, it's not that I don't want a baby boy, I just don't like the idea of definitely knowing! So knowing that I could have been mistaken is making me feel better hope that makes sense!

I'd completely convinced myself I could see boy boys on my 20 week scan - I spent my whole pregnancy being convinced I was having a boy. It was quite a surprised when she was a girl xx

I don't understand your issue with 'gender'??! Are they not called gender scans when you go to find out if your baby is a boy or a girl?!

I also have a friend who was told her twins were a boy and a girl - and got two girls. If the sonographer can occasionally get it wrong, your untrained momentary glance definitely may be!

They're called sexing scans now. The sex means the bits someone is born with, gender is what someone feels they is, if hat makes sense. Your child might feel differently about their gender than what their bits say they are!

They're not gender or sex scans unless you have one privately. The 20 week scan is an anomaly scan to check there's nothing wrong with baby. You can if you choose, find out the sex, but that's not the reason for it.

I found out at 20 weeks we were having a boy, I have the scan photo of his bits and still can't make it out. You probably saw a leg

lauren it's not political correctness, it's just a fact. Most babies turn into people who identify with their sex, but many people don't. That's all I'm saying. And LOL if you thing me pointing that out is irritating

And actually Crumpetty is right anyway, it's the anomaly scan.

I felt sure my unborn child was a boy, I automatically referred to her as 'him', during the 20 week scan I was certain I saw a penis. Turns out, I am not a skilled sonographer - as at 23 weeks the sonographer pointed out a very clearly formed labia.

I was convinced I saw willy's on my last 2 daughters scans

SuburbanRhonda the place I visit for my private scans still advertises them as 'gender' scans, and I believe from the responses on my post that everyone has understood what I meant from using the word gender in my title!

TheCrumpettyTree, I am aware that the 20 week scan is an anomaly scan which is why I did not ask to find out the gender/sex or whatever you would like to call it! I have paid for plenty if private scans with this pregnancy and my previous one and would not hesitate to do so if I wanted to know the 'gender' of my baby :-)

Thank you for all your responses, I am happily tucking away the sight I think I saw and am continuing on my surprise pregnancy!

Just in case anyone finds this thread again, our baby did turn out to be a boy! So I must have seen what I thought I saw but it wasn't confirmed until he came out
