I was offered if I wanted to know the sex at my 20 weeks scan
that is the only routine scan we have here, called the detailed scan

Twiglett · 21/01/2007 13:21

DS at 20 weeks
DD at 23 weeks

Tutter · 21/01/2007 13:21

i was 20 weeks ish with both of mine.

TrinityRhino · 21/01/2007 13:22

oh sorry tutter, didn't realise

Tutter · 21/01/2007 13:24

wasn't clear

i meant a scan specifically for telling the baby's sex

not the 20wk anomaly (sp.?) one

i.e. a totally indulgent one

DS1 22 weeks

I think if you have it too early (not sure how early is too early though) it's less reliable as the sex organs, although developed are less distinguishable.

It's something to do with labia being mistaken for testes, and clitoris being mistaken for penis.

lillaura · 21/01/2007 13:26

ds @21 weeks, dd inside my tum was 19weeks

mears · 21/01/2007 13:29

Why expose a baby to an unnecessary scan privately when the 20wk NHS scan can tell sex (if baby is facing the right way).

Tutter · 21/01/2007 13:30

mears i cannot bring myself to think that scans are risky - because of various problems i have had multiple scans with all my pregnancies

i wasn't asking for opinions on scans thanks

just whether people had had one and when

Fair enough. I think the word 'indulgent' made me respond because the jury is out on repeated ultrasounds in pregnancy. I had to have monthly scans in my last 2 pregnancies but there the benfit outweighed the risk. I think women are too blase about the effects of ultrasound on their pregnancies but I totally accept it is your baby, your choice.

lillaura · 21/01/2007 13:35

apparantly they can tell at the 12 week one if you actually are 12 weeks - i always seem to get my dates wrong was only 10 weeks or 9 weeks for dating scan

DH good friends with an obstetrician - who did my 12 week nucal scan for me last week. He told us that they can usually tell at 12 weeks if they get a good view.

But, although, if you get a good view that early and it looks like a girl it does usually turn out to be a girl on later scans, IF you see what looks like a boy at 12 or 13 weeks there is a 30 % chance that it will be wrong: i.e. turn out to be a girl. Like hippmummy said the clitoris/labia can be large and falsly look like a penis early on. Which is why they usually do not give an opinion that early.

He said if wanted we could come back at 16 weeks or after, when that 30% risk would be gone, and he would be able to tell us for sure - though depends on the baby giving them a good view
So seems like anytime after 16 weeks should be OK, as long as the baby poses right!- Hope that helps

mosschops30 · 22/01/2007 15:51

I was late for my first scan as we were on holiday so ended up being about 15 wks but was told the sex of the baby at this scan then confirmed again at 20 wks
