What happens next? Should I be getting excited?

Stay calm!!! I had a sweep at similar stage and I had a show the next morning and the following day my contractions started and ds came that night. The fact you're 1cm dilated is the good news and means things are starting!! Have you had any twinges? How exciting for you - hope things go really well

lulumama · 18/01/2007 20:20

possibly..things are underway..can take a while...if you are going to go into labour anyway, the sweep will trigger it within 24 - 48 hours

if the cervix is soft and anterior ,that is positive too..

rest, be patient and you'll know when it is time!

you might well have a show, which is also a positive sign, but again, labour might be a few days away

all good stuff...x

Feeling a bit odd but not contracting, and lots
of end of period type blood (sorry if tmi). Just not sure how likely it is to all kick off soon, or if I'll still be fat and waddling this time next week. It's encouraging to hear that a sweep worked for you!

There's no text book answer on sweeps. It worked for me and from the sounds of it its working for you as what you are describing sounds like the beginning of a show. How far past your due date are you?

itsazoohere · 18/01/2007 20:27

Lulumama, can it take a while (days) to go from one cm to ten?

OP posts:
itsazoohere · 18/01/2007 20:28

I'm not past yet-39.2 But midwife offered to do it this morning.

When I was pregnant I read a book which said that lots of pregnant women are a cm or two dilated towards the end of their pregnancy, but unfortunately it doesn't mean anything is imminent. I had a friend who had quite heavy braxton hicks and then suddenly her waters went and she was already 9 cm! In my case, though, I was not dilated at all, went into labour at 2am and wasn't fully dilated until 10 am the next day. For some people it is even longer.

Take it easy, look after yourself and get lots of rest. Sounds like there is a good chance that something will happen in the next few days. Especially as you've had a sweep - you must be past your due date already so can't have long to go! The end is definitely in sight!

Plibble · 18/01/2007 20:33

Ah, not past your date yet. But if you are dilating, something is definitely afoot. It can just take a while for something "proper" to happen, but all that dilating and braxton hicks etc is your body getting ready for the main event.

CountTo10 · 18/01/2007 20:36

I was overdue when I had my sweep and like i say 1cm dilated. That was the wed and I was admitted for other reasons. I didn't get to the labour ward till tea time on friday so it did take a while for it to happen but I think I was lucky that my build up to labour was gradual as it helped me prepare mentally for it. I think other advice re resting and just getting ready is good. And making sure that whoever is on taking to hospital duty is most definitely on call!!!

itsazoohere · 18/01/2007 20:39

I won't get too hopeful tonight then. This is quite painful, though, it just felt like something was poking (out of?) my cervix. Think I'm just being rediculous and doing too much navel gazing
.

Home birth!
(Must wash floors/tidy/train dogs before call midwives).

Plibble · 18/01/2007 20:48

Well, if it does kick off, please let us know - Lulumama is dying for an online Mumsnet birth!

CountTo10 · 18/01/2007 20:48

Wow - is this your first? I've always wondered about a home birth. You'll have to check back in once recovered of course to let us know how you got on. Not too much cleaning though you - got to take it easy Always makes me really broody when you know people are at this stage. Reminds me of my experience and how happy I was. Sigh....I'm such a sap!!! Do you know whether its a boy/girl yet or is it still a surprise?

Frenchsmallfry · 18/01/2007 20:57

best of luck if it does all kick off.
Don't get over excited though. With dd, #2, I was 1cm dialated at 29weeks, but apparently thats common with seconds, I had a sweep at 40weeks, had a show that evening, then spent the next 11 days with false starts. Kept thinking it was happening but when I wen't to bed it would all stop. I was finally induced on day 41+4.

I really hope it happens for you but sweeps and shows don't always signal the immediate onset of labour.

Ohhh I feel like the meany in the playground, SORRY!

itsazoohere · 18/01/2007 21:00

It's my 3rd, but other dds are 11 and 6, so am out of practice. And was induced both times, so have never gone into labour on my own. Oddly am far more unsure of things this time-maybe fears
have come with experience IYSWIM. Don't know what this one is-think a girl, but that maybe because that's all I've been making so far. Can't wait to find out! And don't worry, sure I'll find some obvious thing to question and post on with each twinge-that's the problem with kids going to bed. I get lonely and start to think too much!

itsazoohere · 18/01/2007 21:06

Frenchsmallfry-whilst I would rather only hear from those who have gone into labour IMMEDIATELY and gently eased out babies with no pain just discomfort, I still appreciate hearing the truth! Although obviously I'll be one of the sneeze it out women . Wishful thinking maybe? Or the power of positive thinking!

lulumama · 18/01/2007 21:39

do you know...i couln;t sleep , so i thought i;d pop back in !

well, yes it can take days..or hours ! that is the thing! so hard to predict , as plibble said though, all the twinges and pains are doing something...!

pains & some small amount of bleeding / bloody show can happen after a sweep....

listen to your body

visualise cervix ripening and opening..

rest if you want.....potter if you want

just ..be...

you'll know when it is time..just go with the flow xx

itsazoohere · 19/01/2007 13:43

And now a show!!! (urgggghhh)

Sorry, so excited things are happening. Was actually worried that they meant NEXT jan, not this one. And therefore it was an elephant.

OP posts:
lulumama · 19/01/2007 19:16

ooooooooohhhh......good stuff !!

Frenchsmallfry · 20/01/2007 10:31

Well?????????????????????????????????anymore.

UCM · 20/01/2007 10:33

Yes, anything else happening???

itsazoohere · 20/01/2007 11:00

Nothing. Nearly cried when I woke up and realised. Just lots of manky brown discharge (sorry). Had convinced myself it was happening!

OP posts:
Tommy · 20/01/2007 11:34

maybe today

Frenchsmallfry · 20/01/2007 14:03

itsazoohere, I'm so sorry it hasn't happened yet as you hoped, but I did warn you! Sounds very similar to mine. You just have to wait it out, you could try some baby dancing if you can face it, although that didn't work for me either. Stay positive your little buldle will arrive when it is ready. I know it sounds so rubbish and not what you want to hear but it's your 3rd too and you know really! Make sure you keep us updated though, I'm going to be watching the announcements. It won't be long, good luck.

CountTo10 · 23/01/2007 22:56

Anybody heard whether or not itsazoohere got her wish in the end? I searched the announcements and couldn't see anything.
