Dh and i have been trying for a while and have just decided to stop and focus on the two we have, more money, hols abroad etc. Now that i have got my head around no baby i have just done a test which confirms YES i am! Did one no saturday which was negative, however todays was positive. Feeling a bit of a mixture of happiness but also apprehension. Also i am worried because although i have given up drinking alcohol and coffee, i have been smoking very strong cigarettes approx 15 a day - now feeling really bad and worry i might have done some damage. Will of course stop now but am rather fretful. Please can someone put this in perspective and try to lighten my worry. Thanks - still in shock and feeling very sick!

Congratulations!! I wouldn't worry too much. Until the umbilical cord develops, I wouldn't have thought the baby gets anything (including all the toxins from smoking) from your blood. I don't imagine smoking is good for foetal development at any stage, but as long as you stop now, as you say, I would be surprised if it caused any lasting problems. I had exactly the same worry about drinking before I found out I was pg and have a very happy and healthy ds!
