Panic!!!

I am 39weeks today and just had a growth scan due to reduced fetal movements. I am about to give birth to a monster it seems, 9lb7!!!!

I know that growth scans can be off but I was supposed to get reviewed at the assessment centre afterwards. They were so busy so said they would book me in a consultant appointment for Fri. They didn't check his movements etc even though the scan noted minimal foetal movement, he was quiet during the scan though.

The baby has a massive head and his tummy is off the scale! Just wondering what experience other people have of this? Does this mean definitely induction or c section? I would like to try and give birth myself but the midwives were a bit at that, yet didn't have time to explain why! Any advice or experience would be welcome as I am panicking!!

Stop panicking! The scans have a large margin of error, and 9lbs 7oz isn't ridiculously large. As far as I've been told, there's no reason to induce or do a c-section for a possible larger baby, if there are no other complications. I'm guessing that the midwives didn't want to commit to anything before you see the consultant on Friday. Were you expecting to try for a vaginal birth before this? I can't see that there would be any need to change this just because of a bigger than average baby.

Yeah normal delivery in the Midwife led unit. Just didn't understand why I am being seen by the consultant now but I will just have to stop being impatient and wait for Friday.

I was told I was having a giant baby too was convinced I was going to have one way over 10lbs! I also really wanted to have a natural delivery but it wasn't to be for me, baby's head got stuck (they said this could happen to anyone, she's not even got a bigger than average head lol) I had to have a c section in the end but it's really not the end of the world and with my next I'll definitely try a natural birth again I know someone who gave birth naturally to a baby weighing 11lbs 13oz so you really can't go by their weight, I've also heard bigger babies are known to be easier to push out! My dd weighed 8lbs 3oz, they were quite abit off with her measurements so I would take what they say with a pinch of salt, I'm sure you'll be able to have a wonderful natural birth and if its not meant to be, once you meet your baby you won't care how they got there

The referral to the consultant will probably be automatic if the growth has gone above the expected centile curve. In all likelihood the consultant will have no concerns and sign you back to the midwives.

Thanks Hellooo1! That has put me at ease! Got a phonecall today and seems that I have to come in for an induction tomorrow..... Excited now and what will be will be. Just have to remember that!!
