early scan

Hi,

I'm thinking of having an early scan before telling my parents I'm pregnant with some reassurance, I know a friend who had one at 8 weeks, and was just wondering if anyone else had had one and how early theirs was and if they were able to see heartbeat?

Tbh if you want to tell your parents just tell then. There will be nothing worth seeing on a scan for them.

Plus lots of people have early scans then still get sad news as a scan is just a snapshot in time.

Of course it's an exciting time so.if.you would love a scan go for it. I had two at 9 weeks where i'd had a bleed. One with good news one with bad. The good news baby looked like casper the friendly ghost.

Was lovely to see if thats what you're after.

Around 6 weeks is when you should see a heartbeat but you will only see that in the scan not on a picture. If you were out with your dates at all e.g. behind a week or even just a few days it could make a huge difference in what you see.

I know it's not really going to show anyone anything but will give me piece of mind that all is going well so far at least.

I was thinking of waiting a couple more weeks till 7/8 weeks (as long as I don't have any problems in the meantime).

I found out at 3+5 so waiting till 12 weeks just seems forever already so it's just something as an in between really.

They can't tell u the sex of the baby and NHS hospitals don't want to tell you. It might be worth hanging on for a few more weeks. You can get your money's worth then. I had one done when I was 17 weeks and 7 days and I did not even know that. The good news was after 4 attempts I finally got my boy. I thought I was only 3 months. At this early stage u will see something and private scans are better quality. That's my personal opinion.

Tbh then i would wait until you're at least 8 weeks. Anything earlier and you will probably just worry tbh.

How far along are you?

I am 5+1 at the min. Yes I think from what I have read 8 weeks is the earliest people recommend

I've got an nhs early reassurance scan booked for 9 weeks if that helps to give a guide when to go for it I think if you go too early you might just give yourself possible unnecessary worry.

I have had scans at 6 and 8 weeks in my first pregnancy (due to bleeding). At 6 weeks I could see a pulsing heartbeat in a blob. That was very emotional as the bleeding had convinced me it was all over. At 8 weeks he looked like a little figure of 8 - head and abdomen. In my second pregnancy I also had scans at 7 and 9 weeks as it was an IVF pregnancy. I was on progesterone pessaries and injections so I wasn't sure if I would have bled even if the pregnancy had gone wrong so it was reassuring to see things progressing.

You can see a lot more by 12 weeks but I do understand it feels like a long time to wait. Good luck.

If I get to 7 weeks I will be referred for an early scan by my midwife. Mine follows a mmc and is for reassurance. We didn't tell our parents last time, thinking we'd tell them when we could show them the scan picture. Instead, we found out at 11 weeks that our baby had died a couple of weeks before. Telling them that there was a baby but it had died was horrendous. I was so bereft I needed their support but they then had to deal with a huge tragic shock. Whatever you do, just bare in mind you will need them either way. Good luck. I'm currently 4+6 so I completely understand your need for reassurance.

Yes I agree, if I go too early then it will just cause more worry.
