bottle feeding, what to take to hospital

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what I should take to hospital if I'm bottle feeding? I have all the kit but do I use hospital bottles or take my own? I know I should take formula but should I take a bottle warmer? I'm hoping it will be a simple in and out birth but I have some complications so I could have to go in early (depending on monitoring and profession) and I could be in for a few days (hopefully not) so I want to be prepared

Depends on your hospital. Where I gave birth there were no sterilising facilities so you have to take the ready made disposable bottles. They give you a jug of hot water if you want to heat it. I'd planned to BF so didn't have anything with me so the hospital gave me the formula too.

Hmm, that doesn't sound good. I've already had to spend a night in hospital this pregnancy and they were a bit, umm, useless so I can well believe the facilities will be the same.

Do you know where I can get the ready made disposables from?

We don't provide sterilising facilities so you either bring pre made formula in disposable bottles or use the hospital pre made bottles of formula

I would take the ready made disposables (from boots or probably cheaper Amazon) and feed them room temperature if need be. It'll be easier and lots of hospitals don't offer bottle feeding facilities. If you're immobile you won't be able to go to the kitchen and so on

I took half a dozen ready made up disposable bottles, but had to send DH out for more as we were kept in - they sell them in Boots and you can also get them online. Because it was warmer than a butterfly farm in there the midwife said no need to warm them, and DS has been drinking room temperature formula ever since, much easier !

Ours supply the formula in ready made bottles. I would ask your midwife as seems to vary a lot.

Contrary to the above, my hospital did provide sterilising facilities. I had planned to bf but i couldn't make it work and so was bottle feeding when I was readmitted a couple of weeks later. They had fridges to store expressed breastmilk too. I would ring your midwife or postnatal ward on their non emergency number and ask or ask at your next appointment if soon. Do you have a blue book too? Sometimes the hospitals put details of what hey provide in there or on their websites too.

ring maternity and ask what you need. at out hospital, we need to take, bottles, bottle brush and small tin of powdered milk. they provide steriliser. asda do the ready bottles of aptamil and i think sma too

Definitely the ready made bottles. I got them in the supermarket, most big ones will have them. They come in half dozens. Maybe leave a spare pack at home just in case for husband to fetch. You don't want to be figuring out how to sterilise and faffing about with powder in hospital when you've just given birth.

These are the ones I had. They are so little you could just warm them with hot water from tap in a mug.

Buy the ready made bottles, we used SMA for DS.
I bought them in asda I think, 6 little glass screw top bottles with 6 separate sterile separately packaged teats that you screw on. I took 2 boxes but went home 4 hours after he was born so we didn't need that many.

They are handy to stick in the changing bag as well for when you're out with baby too.

Potato - you can get the ready made cartons of formula (Actimel etc) in Asda and Sainsbury's too. They aren't particularly cheap but would be handy.

I took ready made last time ( will this time too) but our hospital also supplied them

Thanks everyone. I shall have a look for the disposable bottles as they do sound really convenient for the hospital stay.
I know the nurses/midwives in my delivery ward are really spread thin (I was told not to press the call button while I was in before because they're too busy to answer ) so I don't think I can count on much assistance from them. Luckily they have really long visiting hours so if I do have to stay in I'll have my OH to help.
