Single umbilical artery worries

Has anyone had any experience of SUA or two vessel umbilical cord? I'm 16 weeks and recently had a scan at a fetal medicine unit where this was discovered.
Two years ago I had a tfmr as our much wanted baby had a lethal skeletal dysplasia. At the autopsy, it was mentioned that our first baby also had SUA and it is seen more often with abnormalities.
The consultant told me not to worry as there were no other markers. At 20 weeks he will see me again for a heart/growth check and then discuss future pregnancy monitoring.
I'm so worried about losing this baby or having to face another TFMR. We have been trying for 7 years and this was an ivf pregnancy and probably our last chance as I'm quite ancient (39). Thanks

My cousin had a baby with this and had careful monitoring throughout her pregnancy. The baby was born with a slight heart problem which was fixed with a small operation before she turned 2 and in all other respects she is a happy, healthy and bright toddler. Please try not to worry Flowers

My friend had this with her DD. She went into labour naturally at 39 weeks and her DD was born perfectly healthy.

I have cared for lots of women with two vessel cords and outcomes have all been healthy and normal

Yep I had this with my first pregnancy. He is now a VERY energetic almost 3 year old.

  • The sonographer / consultant said a lot of hospitals don't even look for number of vessels any more as its not now thought to mean anything on its own
  • I had growth scans anyway for GD, but one previous thought is a 2 VC could mean smaller baby - well, he is 3 next month and we are buying 4 - 5 age clothes, he is between the 91st and 98 centile for weight and height.
  • I had an extra doppler scan just to check cord blood flow - all fine. They say the vessel just is a bit bigger to make up for only being 1
  • Was born at 38+2 by c section as breech @ 7lb 6. C section was nothing to do with the cord,

Good luck :) and don't worry!
