Anaemic but very sick on iron tablets

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone please had some advice?

I'm 34&4 & anaemic, but the iron tablets I've been prescribed make me very sick. I'm meant to have 3 a day, but after 1 I'm repeatedly sick all day & can't keep anything down. I've been taking them as my midwife suggested - with orange juice then eating something after, avoiding dairy. I've been to my surgery today to see if I can take something like Spatone instead or maybe be prescribed different tablets, but I've been told no, & if I don't take them it might be quite serious for me & baby.

Of course I know I need to get my iron levels up, but don't see how repeatedly being sick all day in late pregnancy (when I should be taking in extra calories anyway) & not keeping any food down is good for me. Sorry I'm just quite teary about it & don't know what to do.

Thank you if anyone is able to help.

You could try the pharmacist, see if they can advise on the capsules. They're only three pound something for the bottle I think. I couldn't hack the tablets after a while, I was being kept awake with stomach cramps.

The ferrous fumarate liquid is called Galfer. Apart from the taste (allegedly chocolate mint) it wasn't as bad as tablets.

It's crazy how many women seem to not be able to stomach iron tablets. I took one about an hour and a half ago just after having my lunch (not the way my midwife told me to take them, but thought it was worth a shot), I've not been sick as yet which is a miracle actually, but will see how I go. I figure taking them differentlying than I've been told & (hopefully!) being able to keep it down is better than taking them as advised and being sick. I still feel awful, but can cope with that. I'll see how I go at the weekend & may pop into the pharmacist to see about alternatives.

Thanks everyone x

I've been buying bags of salad spinach and shoving down a handful of that every time I go to the fridge - every little helps and all that!! Good luck with your tablets and the rest of your pregnancy xx
