Three smokers on the table, lovely time but got home and my chest REALLY hurts. Please tell me a one-off hour of passive smoking won't of hurt baby. I feel bad now for going. Not sure what to do next time I'm invited. Anyone else?

I wouldn't worry too much .... I'm an asthmatic and have been sat with smokers (unavoidable) at one or two points during this pregnancy .... MVs have said to me baby would be fine!!

Don't feel bad for socialising with your friends ... It's not your fault they smoke! Plus you can't always avoid passive smoking!! Maybe next time just mention to your friends that you're worried about passive smoking whilst pregnant and hopefully they will smoke somewhere else! Or stay inside so they have to smoke outside :)

Thanks Orchid. You can't go to a pub garden and expect people not to smoke in my view. I had such a nice time but the smoke was horrid. My body is so much more sensitive now. Thanks for reassuring me. :)

I mean - strangers smoking in a pub. I will follow your advice and ask my friends next time. X

Jeez I can;t believe they smoked at the table!

Junosmum · 07/05/2016 08:53

I can't believe your friends wouldn't think to move over a bit. Complete strangers moved away from me when I was pregnant (without me asking). As a one off it won't do you or baby any harm, like you say, you're just more sensitive now.

If you want smoke free, then you need to sit indoors. Good friends will understand.

My OH and I don't smoke. However I work as a psychiatric nurse and my patients have to have supervised smoking breaks in a courtyard. I was on that ward until I was about 5 months before I got transferred to a lower risk ward. I would stand at the door of the courtyard but didn't want to go outside into the courtyard where they were smoking. I was glad when I switched wards as patients there did not have supervised smoking breaks.

I have a rule that it's ok if it's outdoors. That said, I always switch seats to sit upwind (and say why as that makes the more clueless smokers more conscious about blowing away from me)

I'm breathless enough without gulping in smoke blowing downwind past my face!

My lungs feel fine again this morning but felt weird and horrible last night. It was dark and I had a big coat so I don't think all the people realised. They were also a bit pissed. Pregnancy really does tell your body what's hot and what's not doesn't it. Feel less worried that it's hurt him now. Xx

Tbh I think you need to be exposed to smoke pretty consistently for it to be a problem, so either being a smoker yourself or living with one, so the placenta never gets the oxygen it needs over the course of its existence.

So your placenta is fine cos you're not a smoker.

Oysterbabe · 07/05/2016 10:49

I'm sure you'll be fine but I wouldn't have sat with them. It's quite shocking they didn't move away or at least ask you if you minded. My DH wouldn't let a smoker anywhere near me when I was pregnant or near DD now she's here.

frikadela01 · 07/05/2016 12:48

Just speak up next time. Im sure everything will be fine.

Shanghaichica I'm a mental health nurse too. I'm suprised that they allowed you to continue supervision of smoke breaks. It was one of the first things I stopped doing. I couldn't have supervised even if I wanted t o because all the staff started being overprotective as soon as they found out.

I smoked until the day I found out then quit cold turkey and my DD is absolutely fine so I'm sure yours will be just fine also.
Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy
