Shopping list - what do i need for baby?

I am 20 weeks pg and want to start thinking about buying practical things rather than adding to our pile of cute white babygrows - i keep tellign DH...you 'have' to buy them when they are in the Sale!

Has anyone got a comprehensive list of things that it would be wise to purchase before babys arrival. Am thinking an 'everything ' list from cot to baby wipes?

If not, any suggestions as to what i should add to my list?

Thanks in advance

on back of mothercare book theres good list, just cross half off then you have essentials!

Agree you really need very little of what places like Mothercare say you do you need. There have been a few threads like these and they usually show that what is essential for one person is useless for another but....

you will probably need:

a buggy/pram
car seat
cot/moses basket/crib
nappies
wipes
changing mat
vests/babygrows (not too many as you get given loads!)
some way of bathing - need not be a baby bath.
nursing bra/breast pads or bottles etc

I would recommend getting very little and then add to this once LO has arrived and you feel the need.

babies need

somewhere to sleep
something to travel in
something to eat
something to wear
someone to love and be loved by

and thats it!

cot or moses basket bedding
If you are going to pump breast milk or use formula you will need bottles with newborn teats and a steriliser

Nailpolish, think my DH would very much approve of your list - is much shorter than the one i have made!!

this would be my basic list

babywipes
cottonwool
safe cottonbuds
sudacrem
nappies

bath support (much easier than a babybath)
towels (wouldn't bother with hooded ones, normal ones will fine!)
changing mat

flannels/burpcloths/muslins
bibs
steriliser (might not need it if bf)
feeding equipment (if not bf)

a few blankets for carseat & pushchair
pushchair
carseat
changing bag

cot
fitted sheets
sleepbag or sheets and blankets if you prefer

bouncy chair

bodysuits
some clothes in newborn
plenty of clothes in 0-3m (all-in-ones are great for that age)
cardigan

i was so adamnet i wouldnt buy a baby bath as thought it would clutter up my tiny bathroom, but i used my sister's at her house one night and found it so much easier than running our big bath, plus i bought a spounge foam support pillow that i put inside the baby bath, which means my LO feels much more secure to bob around and loves bathtime!

if you do get a baby bath, try to find one with a plug hole so u can let the water out without tipping it up!

google freecycle and join the group in your area. I put in a wanted ad and got lots of baby stuff from a mum for free. it's also a good way to declutter for the arrival of the baby. mothercare has a hospital bag checklist on their catalogue (also on website I think). You need some sleepsuits and babygros and mittens so they don't scratch their faces among other things. I bought lots from the charity shop. And don't forget NCT's nearly new sales.
