Mum's who developed gestational diabetes.

Hi ladies,
the title is pretty self explanatory - I have my glucose test in 3 weeks time, but I am absolutely dreading it. I have a BMI of 30 and my mother has type 1 diabetes, I also take 500mg of Metformin a day, but have been showing symptoms such as; increased urination, increased thirst and feeling really lethargic.
I was wondering if any of you developed it? How did it affect you? How did it affect your baby / your birth? If you had to take any medication?
I would like to know all, as all I'm doing is sitting on google and googling about it all and hearing awful stories!

I had to keep a record before and after each meal of sugar levels (prick test). Regular scans every 6 weeks.

Was told baby would be big each scan weight kept going up, was booked to be induced the day after due date but baby arrived on due date and was 6lb 10oz. Tiny baby girl all healthy. Had to stay in for two days as they test baby blood sugar every couple of hours. Then came home.

The worst thing you can do is worry and don't google too much

Sorry, I'm not saying you're unhealthy btw, just going by my own experience

Hi charlotte, I was diagnosed with GD with my last pregnancy. I was like you, loads of questions and worries, but there were a couple of really good threads on here that helped answer my questions, I'll try to find them for you.

I did make quite a few changes to my diet and was fortunate that I didn't need medication, just had to do the finger-prick blood test 5 times each day. Wasn't too bad though, you get used to it.

Had no issues at all with the birth, and after the blood sugar tests for me and baby were clear. Have just been called back to my GP practice for a yearly blood sugar test as I'm at greater risk of developing diabetes, but other than that I've no follow on issues.

Is a bit scary, but try not to worry and be positive that with some lifestyle changes it often can be well managed.

I had GD. Diagnosed at 28 weeks and controlled by diet. Had regular consultant appointments and extra scans. Baby born 10 days early (induced) as was already 8lb. Was expecting a big baby anyway though as my first was 9lb without the GD. Bloods tested after birth and all given all clear.

I was diagnosed with GD at 34 weeks and induced at 38 weeks because I struggled to control my early morning fasting sugars and needed Insulin before bed. The day was controlled with diet alone..I was having regular scans anyway and told I was going to have a big baby and my Little boy was born 7lb 6ozs..(I was told at my last scan a few days before I was induced he was 8lb 2) so not all GD babies are massive! I had gd, had to have insulin for mine as even think controlled my diet it didn't show, then I have to have my baby 2 weeks early by section, and that was only cause Id had a pervious section and was safer for me and baby, has to go into hospital night before for a sliding scale, which is basically trying to control my insulin, and they checked my sugars every 2 hours, but soon after baby was born it had dissapeaered and she had no problems what so ever
