12 week scan and slightly worrying results

I had my 12 weeks scan this morning and was a bit unnerved that my chance of a genetic problem is 1 in 55 - they did the nuchal scan test. They said this meant I was high risk for a genetic abnormality. I am having blood tests and get the results tomorrow..at this stage I am trying not to think about CVS and amnio.

I am only 38 which is ok - quite old, but lots of my friends are having their first and second babies well into their forties! This is my 2nd. Feeling a bit disconcerted about it all and what to do... any one had similar experience?

not myself, but a friend had a 'high' risk result like you. She didn't have the amnio in the end, but now has a totally healthy 2 year old, with no problems whatsoever. I have another friend who had an amnio, and also had a perfectly healthy baby now 7 months old. Try and keep saying to yourself that 1 in 55 is still only a 2% chance.

Hopefully the blood tests will be able to put your mind at rest a little more. Thinking of you.

That still means that there is a 54 out of 55 chance of everything being fine - a 98% chance it will all be OK. That sounds like good odds to me !

I had a higher than expected risk of Edwards syndrome with my 2nd pregnancy when I was also 38 (from the blood test, the nuchal fold was fine and I was low risk for Down's syndrome and spina bifida).

I did opt for an amnio in the end and would have terminated my pregnancy if Edwards had been present, as it's a very serious life-limiting condition. In the end I got the all-clear and my dd is now 3.

Do think about what you would do with the results of an amnio before you are put in the position of deciding whether to have one, even though it is very difficult it does help to at least talk it through with your partner.

Over 98% actually { just done the sum again and it's 98.19 % } - so even better odds. Good luck with the blood tests.

I had an almost identical situation - second child at 38, very high chance of genetic condition. For a variety of reasons, I had a CVS and was entirely happy with that choice and the procedure. The hospital and the doctor doing it were fantastic, and basically within 8 days of having the original scan I had had the CVS and received the results.

Funnily enough, when they told me about the scan result I was absolutely fine - just very relieved. They then asked if I wanted to know the sex, told me it was a girl and I sobbed for about 3 hours straight. DD is now 3 and a total poppet.

When I was going through this, my consultant had another patient who had been given a 1:2 chance. She came out fine.

Ladies thank you all so much for your advice. I'll keep you posted as to what happens. In the meantime I reluctantly ( only because I believe that everyone should get the same treatment when they have a baby whatever money you do or dont' have - rather than because I resent spending the money and I know I am fortunate to have been able to do so ) went and had a private scan... which put my chances at 1 in 300. SO there is obviously some discrepancy going on. Still, I won't rest until I get the blood results back tomorrow. Thank you all again, it means a lot Giulia x

Hello to everyone who kindly wrote to me when I posted about my bad scan result.. just wanted to let you know the outcome. Turns out the sonographer got it - very wrong. She said my risk was 1/55 it is 1/2416.

I had an agonising night and am pretty angry about it and going to make a formal complaint. I felt unhappy when she was scanning me but didn't say anything because I'm not a sonographer, but I felt she wasn't confident when she measured the nuchal fold.

The private scan I had confirmed this as did the blood tests I had at my NHS trust and they rang and apologised yesterday. I am lucky I had the wherewithal and cash to get a second opinion. I will be making a formal complaint because there were a number of aspects of the scan that I wasn't happy with at all.

giulia, that's terrible! I'm so pleased that it turned out well in the end, but what a bloody cock up. I think you are totally right to complain.
