Question about Clary Sage Oil

Bubbaloo · 10/01/2007 11:27

I've heard it mentioned as being beneficial during the later stages of pregnancy but wondered if anyone knows what it's meant to "do" or why.
Does anyone know please?

TIA.

I used something last night that had clary sage oil in and it said on there that it had reaxing effects and not to use it in pregnancy but it may have said early pregnancy.
I don't know if it has any other benefits though

You should NOT use Clary Sage in pregnancy or when you are lactating. I am a qualified aromatherapist.

If you have any questions or specific conditions you would like eased just ask and I will help all I can.

y shouldnt you use it? what does it do??

sorry for sounding daft?

Indith · 10/01/2007 11:53

According to the website for a birthing centre I was looking at it is good for massage and in your bath during labour as it strenthens contractions. I assume the effect of causing uterine contractions would be why it should not otherwise be used in pregnancy.

Well I'm glad I asked.

I did actually buy some yesterday but haven't used it.Maybe I'll wait til after I've had the baby,to having a nice,relaxing bath,then.

I used 20 drops in my bath when I wanted to bring on labour.
It was like I'd been drugged. I fell onto the bed and cou;dn't lift my head up.
DP went into the bathroom after me and he was knocked out just from being int he bathroom for a few minutes brushing his teeth before bed.
I'd say it was a bit more than relaxing!!!!

pindy · 10/01/2007 12:25

Clary sage is very good generally, but it is a narcotic and sedative, which is not good for the baby. Will post more later - just have to go out for awhile.

pindy · 10/01/2007 12:28

Yes TeeCee - that is the problem - imagine what it does to the baby!!! You should only put about 6-10 drops in a bath though!!! It's effects are even more pronounced if you take alcohol - so don't.

As I said - it is a wonder oil used correctly for relaxing and destressing, sorts out period problems etc but too strong for a baby.

Pindy..sorry to hijack...am i correct in thinking that all oils are now contraindicated in pregnancy..until actual labour has commenced..have found conflicting info, as a trainee doula, i would like your opinion , if you don;t mind....

pindy · 10/01/2007 12:34

Hi Lulumama

Not all oils are contraindicated, but quite a few, just in case. Some are for the first 3 months and others for the whole pregnancy, I will put a list together for you of the ones that it is felt are fine for pregnancy.

Lulumama

I also practise reflexology - which is great during labour, do you know much about that?

MarsLady · 10/01/2007 12:36

Pindy... could you forward me the list too?

TeeCee · 10/01/2007 12:38

It's a sedative - blimey that expalins it all! I didn't repeat it but being not-pregnant I might use it tonight!

pindy · 10/01/2007 12:44

TeeCee and for tomorrow night I'll tell what aphrodisiac one to use!!! so get plenty of rest.

Yes lovely marslady I will.

TeeCee · 10/01/2007 12:51

hey i used clary sage oil after being told by my mw that it may help bring on labour ( i was 11 days o/d when i gave birth) needless to say it didnt work and it also made me smell like an old lady which was attractive!! anywho i say regardless of what you use things will happen in their own time so these 'remedies' are a big fat waste of money!! hth
