Just wanted to know, once the baby has developed a heart beat does the chance of miscarriage decrease?

It does, and dramatically so. Of course, it's no guarantee , but a very very very good sign that things are going well and will continue to do so.

Had an early scan at 7 weeks 4 days last week and there it was the flickering heart beat. Made my day but still have this dark shadow over me dreading the worst. Most awful time at the moment with fear of the worst.

Have you mc before? It's horrid, isn't it - I've had 3 mcs, one of them 3 months before my successful pg with ds, and the first half of that pg was very difficult indeed. Don't expect your fears to magically resolve themselves - take one day/week at a time, and they will gradually get better and seem less all-consuming.

I think once the heartbeat has been seen the chances of m/c drop to something like 4%. I know this cos I had two early scans (6 weeks and 8.5 weeks) due to bleeding and I frantically looked everything up on the internet to see what the chances of m/c were once they had seen the heartbeat. Am now 38+2 weeks and ready to pop!!!!

Yes, the risk will damatically reduce. I had a scan a 7 weeks due to bleeding and also researched everything I could get my hands on. (dd is going to be 1 on Friday! )

Good luck and hope your pg goes well.

Thanks for your messages. I have never had a "proper" miscarriage, maybe a chemical pregancy.

I had some spotting and sharp niggly pains the week before Christmas and went for an early scan. They could see the yolk sac and fetal pole but wanted to see me again in two weeks to see if fetal pole develops.

I went last Friday and the baby had grown so much and there was a heartbeat. I am now just so so anxious that there will be no baby when I go back on 8th Feb for 12-13 week scan.

I am due to book in with my midwife on Thursday - will she try and listen for the heartbeat?

I have had niggly pains again today. Have been terribly constipated and am hoping and praying that the pains are related to the constipation. Anyone had this experience?

Thanks everyone, couldn't get through this without you all. xxx

Endlesslove, have just posted on another similar post. I convinced myself, even after seeing LO at 6 weeks and 8.5 weeks with heartbeat, that I would go back at 12 and something would have happened. But sure enough, LO was in there waving his/her arms around at me and I burst into tears with relief. The sonographer was fab and really understanding.

It's amazing how much they grow between 6 and 8 weeks isn't it?

They won't listen to the heartbeat cos it is quite difficult to pick up but you will see the heartbeat on your scan - the 12 week scan is SO magical.

I had my first experience of hearing the heartbeat at 16 weeks at my MW appointment. Cried again (bloody hormonal!!!)

I had a scan at 6+3 and there was a very clear heartbeat which i was thankful for cause as a first timer, if i hadn't seen one i would have panicked. Recently had my 20 week scan and its a healthy little girl! I have never m/c or anything, however that doesn't stop me being a worrier, even now i still have the odd day where i just worry! Good luck with your pregnancy
