How long in hospital after birth?

I'm currently 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Up until now, I assumed I'd be in hospital upto 24 hours after giving birth - which is fine by me as I don't like hospitals and would much rather be at home with my husband and own comforts. However, a friend of mine has also just had her first baby and she was in hospital for 9 days!!! That terrifies me! I don't know full details but she did have a CS. And her baby had a mild infection. I don't want to be in hospital without my husband and then surrounded by strangers. Will I be able to go home when I want (unless something really serious has happened)?

First baby - 6 hours after delivery.
Second baby - born at home.

I stayed in for 10 hours after DD was born and got home with her at about 11pm. The midwives were happy for us to go and said they'd discharged people at 2am before. With hindsight I think I'd have stayed in for that first night but I wanted to get home and sleep in my own bed (oh how naive I was!).

I was in for 8 days in total. 4 days being induced and 4 days after EMCS due to an infection. It was fine, bit boring but fine.

I was in for about 48 hours after each birth (one EMCS, one ELCS). Definitely take very thin, lightweight clothes, postnatal wards are hot even by hospital standards.

Everyone I know was in for similar lengths of time, bar one who was in for a week as the baby had an infection.

I could have gone home after a few hours but I chose to stay the night for help with breastfeeding, glad I did as DD wouldn't latch onto the left side and the midwives helped me in the night to get her latched on a few times, they offered me a second night but I went home.

I out it in my maternity notes that I was keen to get home as soon as possible...tbh I think the hospital are that desperate a for beds that the paediatrician checked DS over within a couple of hours and we were discharged and home within 6 hours! I was very lucky tho - forcep delivery but other than that it was straight forward with no drugs.

I discharged myself after 22 hours with ds, he was fine so though they were not keen they couldn't say much I had a lot of damage so they wanted me on however they done nothing apart from give me co codamol I had to get up and deal with ds/shower/sort food alone I was better at home with dp and family to take care of me.

Having a planned section this time and will be leaving after 24 hours unless either of us needs further treatment then I would stay, I told my mw I would not be staying just to be given pain meds I could take at home she pretty much said there's not much we can do if you want to go.

4 days with my first, due to feeding issues. About 16 hours with my second - had her at 2am, was home by 6pm that day.

Like everyone says they won't discharge you till you & baby are well enough to go x
With my DD1 I has post partum blood loss ended up with blood transfusion of 3 pints in hospital 3 days. DS2 12 hrs ..and finally with DD3 24hrs hours due to meconium was in my waters when it broke so baby had to be monitored to rule out any infections.

FortyFacedFuckers · 11/04/2016 10:45

I asked to go home 5 hours after DS's birth they said I could go home by the time I got the paperwork etc I was discharged by 5pm DS was born at 11am

LittleLionMansMummy · 11/04/2016 19:42

I went in at 3am, gave birth at 7 and came home at 10.30am the following day. I'd have gone home as soon as I'd given birth if I could have had my way.

Dsis was in for 3 days but that was because they failed to give her antibiotics for strep B when in labour so she had to stay longer so they could give antibiotics to my niece when she had been born.

LittleLionMansMummy · 11/04/2016 19:42

Sorry meant I went in a 3pm not am.

I had a vaginal delivery with ventouse and episiotomy (ouch). DD born at 1.40am and we were home that same day, about 3pm?

2 of those hours were also just us waiting to be discharged on a busy understaffed ward, I'm like you OP and I was itching to leave!

What helped was that I was up and showering, walking about immediately, plus DD latched and fed like a champ from the off so I was lucky in that regard.

DC1 - normal delivery - 2 nights
DC2 - crash section - 5 nights (to monitor baby in case of infection)
DC3 - ELCS - 24 hours (I had them whip the catheter out ASAP and bags were packed after about 12 hours Grin)
