she is only a few weeks preg - 6 at most. this is her second baby. she is lightly spotting and has been for a week. hospital says she must stay in bed til it stops.

does anyone have any experience of this? does it usually mean an imminent miscarriage, or can it be temporary and not nec a problem? she wants this baby so much.

tia

hi..i'm afraid that there is no definitive answer..if she is going to miscarry, nothing, not bed rest will stop it.

however...many many women experience varying degrees of spotting and bleeding in early pregnancy and go on to have a a healty pregnancy..obviously some do not.....

if she has no pain , that could be a good sign

has she had any scans , blood tests , anything?

poshgirlformerlymaggiesmama · 07/01/2007 11:34

apparantly they cant scan for another week or two. thats all the info she has.

almost sure there is no pain - she thought she had her period til she took a test.

thanks for replying

they should be able to scan with ds i started spotting at 5w and had a scan (internal) which showed the sac. it was just cervical erosions. if there is no pain then thats a good sign. fingers crossed

Has the hospital investigated why she is bleeding? Bleeding in early pregnancy is extremely common and can happen for a number of reasons. The most important thing to do is to establish if the pregnancy is viable and if there is a reason for the bleeding. If she is miscarrying no amount of lying in bed will help and she could need medical intervention if the miscarriage does not complete naturally. They should be taking blood to establish whether her HCG levels are rising at a sufficient rate for a viable pregnancy (especially if this has been going on for a week) and it is possible that depending on her location she will be offered a scan to locate the pregnancy and to check whether it is progressing normally (usually only after 6 weeks).

I bled in early pregnancy, was given two scans and various tests. I had a cervical erosion- very common- and the baby was fine. I am currently 22wks and have had no further problems.

I wish your friend the very best of luck. I know how terrifying it can be to think that you are losing a much wanted pregnancy. I have had a miscarriage and a normal pregnancy with explained bleeding and both experiences were emotionally and physically difficult. She will need her friends around her whichever is happening to her.

I wish her lots of love and luck.

if she has a scan at 7 weeks.....it is better as far more likelihood of seeing sac, embryo and heartbeat.....early scans can be so hit and miss , depending on the equipmnet and the expertise of the person doing the scan....

A few reasons why she's bleeding,

sub choronic hemorrhage (I had one with this pregnancy, but luckily no bleeding)--hemorrhages repair themselves, but resting is really the only way for that to happen, in which bed rest is a good idea.

--cysts (also have one with this pregnancy)

cervical bleedingit's possible that if she's had sex that could cause some spotting

--miscarriage

She needs to get a scan so they can rule out anything, and tell her to baby her baby's house.

lissielou · 07/01/2007 11:47

it could also be implantation bleeding again vv common, if the blood is like the end of af then its likely to be harmless bright red straight to hosp

IF I WERE YOUR FRIEND I WOULD INSIST ON A SCAN AND HCG LEVEL. MOST HOSPITALS HAVE EARLY PREGNANCY CLINICS TO DEAL WITH THIS, I CANT BELIEVE SHE HAS TO WAIT. I HAD SPOTTING AT 6 WEEKS AND HAD A SCAN AND BLOODS DONE AT THAT STAGE.....THINGS DID NOT TURN OUT FOR THE BEST BUT AT LEAST I FELT EVERYTHING HAD BEEN DONE....HOPEFULLY THIS IS SOMETHING AND NOTHING BUT YOUR FRIEND MUST BE SO STRESSED OUT WHICH CANT BE GOOD FOR HER OR THE BABY.

Thank you all for good advice. I'm 'THE spotting friend' of super wonderful poshgirlformerlymaggiesmama (thanks darlin' for all your concern and action). Just to let you know it's too early for any tests as yet - just over four weeks so it sounds like I'll just have to wait with baited breath till early scans and blood tests can be done. 14 days spotting tomorrow! I cant help being anxious and analysing any tiny twinge or ache.

lissielou · 08/01/2007 15:47

totally understandable, but ive had 1 successful pg and 3mcs and the mcs were all like a period, whereas with ds the bleeding was like the vvv end of a period, iykwim. if you are still spotting in a few days try for a scan via nhs direct. good luck
