Repeat UTIs in pregnancy

Has anyone had experience of this? I'm 20 weeks and on my third course of antibiotics in three months for UTI and it's really wearing me down and worrying me. I didn't have problems with DC1, though have been prone to UTIs for a long time.

I saw OOOH GP over the weekend, will try and get a regular appointment with my GP ASAP to discuss and make sure it's clearing, just hoping to find someone who's got some wisdom or advice! I do everything recommend for prevention.

I had huge kidney problems in pregnancy and was on high grade antibiotics throughout my 3rd pregnancy. UTIs galore, kidney infections, kidney stones ..... i wasn't very good at being pregnant!

my dc are now 16, 14 and the kidney issue girl is 12! I took massive amounts of antibiotics, anti-spasmodics and pain meds and it hasn't affected her one little bit (unless you agree that being arty, quirky and into fashion stuff!)

I was on antibiotics until 30 weeks with her and then for 10 weeks from 36 weeks (when she was born)

A lovely doctor told me (when i was struggling to accept it all) that the personal side effects not taking the drugs actually affected the growth and development of the baby as stress has a huge effect on development. So you should take the medication.

Utis are bloody awful - you have my sympathies. I had recurring utis before pregnancy and I had one when I was 7 wks pregnant and I didn't realise at the time I was pregnant and I took various meds for it. The rest of my pregnancy I was hyper vigilant and I bought some urine dipsticks (online from amazon) so I could test myself regularly. But the hospital was also hyper vigilant as was my gp, and I got tested at every visit (which was most weeks!). Ask your gp to send your urine sample to a lab to check it's cleared rather than just rely on the dipstick test. The lab can also recommend the right antibiotic for whichever bacteria you have.

As the baby gets bigger it squishes your bladder and even after you've peed there can still be some sitting part way down like a permanent little puddle of stagnent pee, this is how it was put to me,so was told that once I'd finished going to stand up then sit again to see if anymore would come out. I had about three during pregnancy and two in the weeks following whilst everything went back to where it was. Also your kidneys are in overdrive so you need to drink more water than you usually would.

@weegiemum thank you so much for your experience. On the same boat here pregnant with a lot of antibiotics due to bacteria in urine and really worried about the effects of this antibiotics on baby. By any chance do you recall which ones you took? Congrats on your beautiful children
