had my nuchal scan today (all good, risk dropped from 1:300 for my age to 1:1400) and she asked if i'd heard the theory about heartrate and gender. baby's hb was 171bpm, i.e. quite fast, hence more likely to be a girl.

nonsense or not?

ooh better shed my xmas name now...

coppertop · 04/01/2007 16:42

All 3 of mine had similar heartrates (around 145-155 IIRC). I had 2 boys and a girl.

scotlou · 04/01/2007 16:48

I remember my midwife being convinced that my 2nd baby was a boy as the heartrate sounded like a train - and then while lying in the delivery room I clearly heard a galloping horse - and out popped dd! So I think it may be the rhythm rather than the rate..

geordiemacmincepie · 04/01/2007 16:52

Mines was 160 for the first 4 months.. at 20 week scan most definately a boy... I reckon that there must be a correlation between the babies heart beat and your own... and is therefore dependant on whether you have been sat on your arse or just run up and downstairs.... I have a doppler and at 23 weeks it does vary depending on time of day and such like but is normally around 140...

I would imagine that your heart would be racing with nerves...

mumatuks · 04/01/2007 16:53

Well, I'm pretty sure it's all rubbish. I think all doctors would dismiss it!
Saying that, all my 3 DS's heart rates were around the 130-140 mark, never over. So it's true in that sense.

bubblebell1 · 04/01/2007 16:54

i was told by my midwife today that the heart rate slows a little during pregnacy neway. ie the smaller the fetus the faster the heart rate.

at 20 weeks baseline was 150 and today was 130 so think it changes.

not 100 % tho

oops sorry

TheArmadillo · 04/01/2007 16:58

I wouldn't bet on it put it that way.

Its interesting but no more.

MerlinsBeard · 04/01/2007 17:07

i have 2 boys, 1 was slow heart rate and one was fast

NYceKiwi · 12/01/2007 17:23

Definitely nonsense. The midwife who admitted us when I was in labour with ds2 said it was a girl due to fast heartbeat. Shame she had gone off shift by the time I gave birth!

NYceKiwi · 12/01/2007 17:25

And he weighed 10lb 1oz full-term so I wouldn't say weight had anything to do with it either

fairyjay · 12/01/2007 17:27

Was correct for my two - boy and girl!

DaisyMOO · 12/01/2007 21:14

It isn't true. What is true is that it starts off at 5 weeks around 75-80 bpm, gets faster up until 9 weeks and then gradually goes down again. There's more information here if you're interested

IdrisTheDragon · 12/01/2007 21:18

fast heartbeat - ds
slower heartbeat - dd

kickassangel · 12/01/2007 21:36

from hertbeat & measurements, and what we saw on scan, we were expecting a big boy.
dd was 6 lb.

Jossiejump · 12/01/2007 23:02

DS1 had heart rate of 135-140 (right on the cusp) thought he might come out a hairdresser if you get my drift!!!
DS2 had heartrate of 160-so obviously my two disprove the theory. (As did a friend who's DD was 130)
