Telling the family

Looking for some mumsnetters to have a bit of a vote on my dilemma.
DH and I have been debating whether to tell my parents we are expecting baby number 2, to wait until after the scan, or just to keep quiet until the pregnancy can no longer be hidden!
My parents can be a little over-bearing, and will definitely have some negative things to say about us having another baby when our DD is still so young (10mo at the moment). I don't know whether to just bite the bullet, tell them when I see them tomorrow and accept the tirade of negative opinions that will come along with it or wait. My issue with waiting until after the scan is that my mum might be a bit upset/angry if she finds out at the same time as the extended family after the scan!

So WWYD?

I would just get it over and done with and try and set the tone and pre empt any negativity/was it planned questions by saying 'we have some good news!'

If they're just going to be negative I'd hold off as long as possible.

If they get annoyed at finding out at the same time as others tell them you didn't want to deal with negativity in early pregnancy.

DH had the idea of maybe getting my mum one of those "for grandma" Mother's Day cards, and sign it from DD and baby EggyBread #2, so that they can make their own minds up whether they are happy about it or not. At the end of the day, I know it's only really mine and DH's happiness that matters with regards to expanding our family, but there's always that niggling feeling of wanting approval from the parentals

I had the worry of telling MIL as DC2 was a very unexpected shock and we live in a 2 bedroom house (they'd moan about money/house not big enough). I had expressed that I didn't want another child until DD was at school (2yrs away) but accidents failure of coil happen. Anyway we waited until we'd had our 12wk scan then told them the next day. To be honest they didn't seem arsed very interested and didn't even ask when I was due. I felt bad for DH as I think it bothered him a bit but then again my DH parents don't really take much of an interest with DD but are more for SIL children. I'm sure your mum will be over the moon as altho a shock my mum was really happy. Good luck for when/how you tell them

Tell them tomorrow. Mothers' Day will be a good excuse to insist that everyone is only positive about it.

Sorry to hear about your MIL's reaction Jen! My parents adore DD, but I can picture the "telling off" that will be in store when I tell them because surely I'm "old enough to know how contraception works" or something along those lines
I think I will tell them tomorrow cheap, and if they get a face on about it, then at least we have the excuse that we have to leave to go and give DHs grandma her Mother's Day presents!

It's OK MyBread as I'm not a fan of my MIL either it was more for DH that bothered me. I'm sure your parents will be fine and it's lovely telling your mum on mothers day too
