Rhesus Negative

My mil said something last night that goes against what I think will actually happen ...
I know I will get an anti-d injection at 28 weeks and another one after birth if the baby is rhesus positive.
My mil said last night 'oh they take your baby away straight after you give birth if you have that blood type'.
I think this sounds like nonsense, as the anti-d injections are to avoid complications, but don't know where she got it from? She said it as if she were certain.

By take it away I can only assume she meant for testing or treatment but she didn't elaborate

I had my anti D at 28 weeks and one after the birth. My son wasn't taken away from me after birth but we took home to get blood tests a bit later on at the SCBU in the hospital. I had to wait outside as I couldnt bear watching them take his blood so OH had to take him in on his own.

It was absolutely fine.

I am thesis negative, don't remember either of my two being taken away for any tearing. Maybe there was a heel prick test or something I wasn't aware of? But as far as I remember, your baby won't be taken away (maybe they did in previous years?).

hello, I'm O neg and also work in pathology lab in the hospital... they just test babies blood for Grouping. That's all and if they're positive you'll get another whack of anti-D.

Nope, I'm Rhesus negative, they took blood from the cord and tested that, later that day confirmed my DD's blood was positive and gave me another anti d injection. Had my DD with me the whole time.

This confused me as I was sure it was the cord blood they tested, I know hubs blood type is -ve so would not have let them prick my baby unnecessarily. Thanks for confirming dixiechick.

If it worries you, get it on your birth plan that they have to get your consent before anyone removes/ sticks needles into your baby.

I'm RH neg, all 3 DDs are RH pos but none were taken away at birth and this was a long time ago - DD1 is 40 this year (makes me feel really really old!)

I'm Rh positive they test the cord blood. They don't take your baby away. They'll let you know the results.

Midwife here: we take blood from the cord for grouping but on very rare occasions (if we can't get a good sample from the cord or, er, if we forget (ONCE in my second year of training and I was MORTIFIED) we would need a sample from baby instead, but the paeds can get that while the baby's with you.

They take blood from the cord after the birth. Neither of my babies were taken away from me. No sure where your mil has got this from but scaring you isn't helpful.

Glad nobody takes your baby away after birth. I worried when I first saw this thread.

Definitely not. I'm RH- and DD is RH+ and she was never taken away from me.
