Stopped bf'ing ds on 21st Dec. No AF since ds birth. He's just turned 1.Have been having unprotected sex in knowledge might become pregnant. Felt "strange" before xmas and took pg test - negative - bit disappointed. Dh commented Saturday that I had put on weight (nice!), and should perhaps take pg test again - had very faint positive result. This afternoon have started very light bleed, just spotting.
Could I be pregnant, or is it false hope due to hormonal fluctuations after stopping bf'ing?
Can't get doc's appoinment til late in week at earliest, anyone got experience/advice? Thanks

I don't think you can get false positives - fluctuation hormones don't give you hcg, only pregnancy.

I'd say you are pregnant and hopefully just having implantation spotting.

have you told gp surgery that you are pregnant, they are supposed to get you in earlier to be seen.

I've only just joined mumsnet and was about to start up my own thread very similar to yours. How bizarre!

I'm in a similar boat to you only my ds is only 3 months old so this has come as a huge surprise. I too was feeling a bit funny just before Christmas and almost as a joke I did a test. I had been feeling sick and just peculiar so did a test really just to rule it out. I had had some spotting two weeks earlier so thought it was my first period since my daughter was born. The test showed a very faint line like yours but I spoke to a pharmacist and she said no matter how faint, a line is a line.

My husband and I are clearly shocked but we've had a few days now to get used to the idea. We knew we wanted more babies but just not so close together! We already have a ds who is only 16 months older than our new daughter so we're heading for 3 babies under 2 and a half! Sounds like chaos to me.

My husband and I haven't had sex many times since the birth of our daughter and seeing as I've had no periods we have no idea what stage I am at. I think we should both do another pregnancy test and then get to the docors if the results are confirmed. I've actually just sent my husband out to the chemist.......

Look forward to hearing from you again.

Agree with Flamesparrow as the same thing happened to me.I got a VERY faint positive, then a small bleed a couple of days later and am now 24 weeks pg.

i asked a question about this for my mum who was told her positive could be due to hormonal fluctuations in menopause. someone on here told me on first response is sensitive enough to alter cos of non-pregnancy hormone fluctuations and with any tests that are more than 25mIU/ml if there is a line you are pregnant cos they are not sensitive enough to detect any other fluctuations in hormones. also beware of the evaporation lines. did you see the line within the time specified in the instructions or after? if after, then might not be cos you are pregnant.

I would go see your doctor. I think its rare to get a false positive.

virago · 01/01/2007 18:30

thanks for your advice, I went out and bought a first response (thank goodness for Sainsburys!!) before i read we wish you's message, it showed positive, within the 3 minutes specified, so it's looking hopeful. Will go to gp's tomorrow and nag them for referral to early pg unit at local hosp to find out for sure, and let you know. How about you, twotinkers?

which test did you use before the first response one?

twotinkers · 02/01/2007 12:35

What's going on? I've just done another test (first response) and there is no second line.......

It's been 8 days since I got the faint positive so I thought I was guaranteed to get a strong line today. I feel terrible, really sad as I'd started to get excited about having another little one.

I was impatient and just ripped the packet and weed. Whilst I was waiting I read the instructions properly and it said I should have turned it over to wee on so the window wasn't facing upwards. I know I'm an idiot but like I said I was just desperate to do it. Could this have made the difference? Now what?

So sorry Virago, I forgot to say Congratulations! that is brilliant news.

Twotinkers - was it really a huge shock to both you and dh you might be pregnant after having sex a few times unprotected?

nothercules · 02/01/2007 12:39

oops sorry for the grin. Just read your last post.

virago · 05/01/2007 10:59

hi
sorry for the delay getting back to you. Went to Dr's yesterday, he just asked me if i'd used a test (first was superdrug cheapy/own brand type, second one was first response), and then sent me to book in with nurse.
The local midwife only visits the surgery on a Monday so won't hear anything or get scan until at least next week, Dr. says no need to hurry as no bleeding now etc.Just looking forward to real confirmation from hospital.
Sorry for your disappointment twotinkers, it might be worth trying to test again, I don't know why they say turn window away, perhaps you can "over wet" the window which affects the result. As someone else mentioned, I think it's very unusual to get a false positive result.
{{{{{hugs}}}} to you.
