confused...first midwife appointment

Hi all,

I had my first midwife appointment today (I'm 8 weeks) and was told it would be at least 45mins long, with urine and blood tests, lots of form filling, info from midwife and family history checking.

I had none of this and was in an out in under 10 mins. I was given nuchal test info, prescription & dental exemption, asked what hospital I want to give birth in and that was it...

Feeling a little confused. I asked the midwife if they didn't need to take blood urine etc, and she said it'd happen at my first scan at the hospital.

Is this normal? Feel a bit fobbed off!

I think things differ from area to area. I know some areas they do booking in and first scan all together at 12 weeks.

I had my bloods etc all at my first scan. I think it depends on where you're having your baby etc. They didn't do anything other than check my health history at my mw appointment.

Many areas are different. I am in shared care across two trusts (where I live & community MW and where my hospital/ consultant is) and I have two sets of completely different notes with different questions. My booking appointment was interesting as MW had never done a shared referal before and I have a fabulously complicated history so my appointment was about 2 hours long!

I had an 8 week appointment, much like yours then a 10 week on which was my 'booking in' I got my 12 week scan date the day before my 10 week appointment.

Did they complete your maternity booklet? Filling in that alone takes 20 minutes as so many questions. I had a docs appt first which was only a few minutes but my first midwife was nearly 45 minutes.
Check when your next midwife appointment is and check time they need.

Took just over an hour

Sounds fairly standard. Bloods get done at 12 week scan here. Booking in is a few basic medical history questions and weight and height. Doesn't take too long.

Didn't have any kind of maternity booklet filled in...just checked they had my right address and telephone number...

Will the hospital do all this paperwork then? Seems really strange...

Also never weighed me or took my height. Or blood pressure. I was literally in and out in under 10 mins...

It's normal-they'll do all that at your scan at the hospital. I referred to a hospital out of area so I just did the questions at my first appointment. In my area it's a birthing centre which is why they do all the tests etc at the doctors. It really depends on the area. Don't panic and please don't be disappointed-I remember I wanted the fuss almost to prove to myself it was all real lol-now at 33 weeks I wish they'd leave me alone

I filled the booklet at eight, bloods and urine at ten, scan at twelve then booked in again for urine at 16. I guess each area is different but maybe call your midwife to discuss?

I had the epic booking in at 8 weeks and they filled in the booklet etc. I had bloods and urine at that appointment. I had my 12 week scan and another set of bloods for the screening tests after that. They love taking blood in my trust!
