dried fruit

apricots, prunes, figs etc

and lots of water and fresh orange juice........

if really bad, see the chemist, they can advise on anything that you can take...x

Lots of dried fruit as recommended below - prunes do it for me. Not sure how suagr water would help

Lactulose really works but only on prescription after seeing GP - might be worth booking an appt for after the holidays in case it doesn't improve.

Been suffering from same due to iron tablets-but after eating half a packet of prunes this afternoon swear am a good couple of pounds lighter!

lulumama · 24/12/2006 23:00

sugar water.....used to give to babies if they were colicky / unsettled/ constipated.....NOT recommended now!!

lazyemma · 25/12/2006 09:23

I sympathise. It sounds like you don't usually suffer with constipation (unlike me) so I think water and dried fruit will suffice - dried prunes or apricots are very effective for most people. Also try to up your fluid intake to at least 2 litres a day, and in future you could try supplementing your diet with fybogel. You can get this on prescription from your GP so you don't have to pay for it (assuming your exemption certificate has come through by now. If not just buy it from the shops)

Home made Christmas cake!!

divastrop · 25/12/2006 20:17

i always find fybogel makes it worse in pregnancy.i have suffered the same in my last and current pregnancy,i am now nearly 29 weeks and still cant do without the lactulose!

Elasticwoman · 25/12/2006 20:28

To relieve constipation: cup of coffee + extra fluids, (water and juice) little and often. As others have said, dried fruit is good, but also fresh fruit eg grapes and veg such as beans, lentils, peas. Also, get moving - go for a walk or something. Basically don't eat anything that has little or no fibre, and keep hydrated. Constipation is horrid - I always preferred to be iron deficient than take iron. Good luck.

Of course you might be off coffee being pregnant - forgot. Guinness can get you going too but you might be off alcohol too.
Prunes (from a tin so you get the juice) can work like magic. How are you this morning?

Dingdongdebbsyandbibbyonhigh · 26/12/2006 15:05

my mw recommended prune juice to me when i was pg with ds and it worked for me all the way through my pg.

Bella23 · 26/12/2006 18:47

When I was pregnant I found that if I had a pre-biotic little drink first thing it kept me regular

ticklemepinkwithtinsel · 27/12/2006 19:45

Freshly popped pop corn.

DimpledThighs · 27/12/2006 20:08

I suffered very badly when I was pregnant. I found that all bran every morning, prune juice and dried apricots was vital and...

water water WATER!

drank 2l of fizzy water a day at least!

Scootergirl · 27/12/2006 20:10

Kiwi fruit - strange but true! Worked like a charm for me when I was pg. Hope you feel better soon x

Elasticwoman · 27/12/2006 21:40

Prune juice? Why leave out the prunes, which have the fibre?

My 84 yr old mother brought her own prunes over Xmas. She decanted them into a jar and kept them in the fridge. This morning she got out jar and had spooned at least 5 into her bowl before realising they were beetroots!

Pregnancy gives us all a sneak preview into old age, I always think. What a jolly thought.

paulaplumpbottom · 27/12/2006 22:11

Bran flakes, they always work for me.

DimpledThighs · 27/12/2006 23:30

prune juice worked for me as I was in the throws of morning sickness and getting other food down me. Prune juice was easily sipped whereas a whole prune took some eating.

time4tea · 28/12/2006 11:48

All-Bran, only thing that worked for me (two days of desperately eating all the fruit/veg etc I could and feeling worse and worse)

good luck

MerryPiffmas · 28/12/2006 11:53

for all you ladies how need iron TAKE SPATONE from you chemist/health food shop. ironised mineral wtaer no constipation!
I had horrednous constipation 3 weeks ago, I had to use a glycerine suppository at one point tas was erm blocked at the exit
What ahppens is your bowel becomes sluggish due to progesterone, so rather than going daily you go every 2-4 days
The poo at the coming out end dries and becomes hard to pass.
Lactulose is good and a midwife can ok it for you.
Drink lots of water and as many prunes as you can bear, I chop up dried ones and have them in fruit salad. or prune juice with OJ/Grapefruit is palatable.
Plenty of veges/fruit - kiwfruit have sorted me out, 2 per day I also triued Guinness over xmas (not loads just a small glass) and that really worked.
