can i ask something?

i became pregnant on the pill at the mere age of 17. a few people basically told me i was stupid and should have used a condom as well. in retrospect i would do this in future, but i don't think i would go as far as to say i was stupid not to use both methods, with someone who i knew had no STIs. (when i started seeing him he had just had to had a check cos his ex had an infection of some sort.)

ANYWAY i'll get to the point. one of my friends met a girl at her antenatal class who was on the pill and used condoms but still got pregnant. just wondering how rare/common it is to have used condoms and another method of contraception like pill, injection etc but still get pregnant.

well...if you take the pill correctly , it is a very safe method...not sure of the exact stats...same with condoms..althbugh more margin for error as some seminal fluid can leak before the condom is on, IFYSWIM....and if it comes off etc...... i was on the pill for 10 years and never told to use additional precautions UNLESS on certain antibiotics or had vomiting etc.... so no, i don't think it is stupid.

why be on the pill if you have to use barrier method too? my GP is a family planning specialist and never told me this! The only time it would be releveant is a new relationship./ one night sort of thing where you cannot be sure that the persom you are with doens;t have an STD

you might be better re-posting this in health as someone might see it who knows the relevant stats.

ASFAIK, using pill & condom and getting pregnant ( when using both methods correctly ) must be very rare!

the safest method...apart from abstinence , is the mirena coil IIRC.....

To be brutally honest, I doubt people who say they got pregnant via a split condom. Yes, it happens, to in my experience, people say it when they just haven't been careful, but are abit ashamed to admit it. Obviously, it can happen... but very rare. Especially with another contraception aswell.

Hmm, dh and I have had several "condom failures". I took the MAP earlier this year because of one. In fact I posted on here about it and VVVQV still hasn't tired of teasing me about it

Not saying it can't happen... but when I went for my abortion they asked what method of contraception I was using - I was honest and said none. Then when I had to choose something to go on, I said id prefer condoms, they said "oh, nearly everyone who comes here is here because they have split". I think im too honest for my own good!

I think that condoms and pill together is a little ott if you are in a relationship. As long as the pill is taken correctly, I think getting pregnant is very unlikely. I have been on the pill for almost 15 years and when I came off it to try for a baby it took a few months.
A friend of mine has 2 girls and she said she became pg even though she used condoms, I find this hard to believe personally, I think one mistake is possible - but surely you would learn from the first mistake!
Basically if mother nature intends you to get pg, you will!

some people are just over fertile i guess? i now know my mum got pregnant every time on the pill. she has 3 children and also had 3 mcs. i think she said she had a test which came back saying she was over fertile. maybe it runs in the family?

condons are only 97% effectice and the pill is only 98% effective (don't jump on me I could be wrong) and thats only if taken totally correctly

Nothing is 100% so when you think about how many people are having sex with condoms only then maybe 3 out of each hundred aren't working thats alot

even with pill I think the amount of genuine cases that didn't work would be alot

same here quootie...but never had a scare when on the pill....have a coil now as don;t want more childern but too young to be sterilised......

yes, those stats sound approximately right...but i think 98 % effective is actually quite effective !
