I am just buying a few things for when baby arrives and I am looking at waterwipes for when out and about. For how long should we only be using water and cotton wool or water wipes and when can you start using wet wipes?

Plenty of second-borns get wet wipes from birth and do fine, but I think the recommendation is about 6 weeks of just water. I bought washable cloth wipes which are very good - you might be interested in checking them out.

I've packed Huggies wipes in my hospital bag! Dc2, didn't do it with pfb. From talking to other first time mums, it varied from a couple of weeks to several months for us to variously give up using cotton wool & water. It depends on you & the sensitivity of your baby's skin!

We just used normal baby wipes ( I think we got the pampers sensitive ones) from birth. Our daughter didn't react to them so was fine.

I used water wipes from birth. It didn't do DS any harm.

He tries to eat wipes now (he's 17 months) nappy change time is SUPER fun in my house now

Mine had wet wipes from birth and has only ever had a sore bum when he's had a tummy bug

I used Pampers and Huggies wipes. Had no problem at all.

Any good quality baby wipes are fine.

When I had dd2 the midwife in the hospital changed her for me and asked if I had brought wet wipes. I've used them from birth on both my dd's and it's been fine.

I think I am just being a bit pfb. Thanks for advice, it is another thing to think about.

All my newborns were sensitive to wipes for a few weeks. I don't think you're being pfb about it. :)

Don't worry too much, DH used the wipes they gave me to use to freshen up in hospital on DD's newborn bottom and she was OK. They definitely weren't mild or sensitive!

It's good to be pfb! I'd stick up on water wipes, cotton wool and regular wipes - you'll use them all at some point!

I used the cotton wool to start with at home and then water wipes out and about. Top and tail bowl was useful, stored all the cotton wool in one side and put water in the other. Water wipes are more expensive but I thought it was worth it for those first weeks.

Expecting the next one now, we use washable wipes so I'm hoping I can just use them instead of the cotton wool?

I was all set with cotton wool with my first but midwives in hospital told me wipes would be fine. They gave me some pampers sensitive and he was fine. Much easier than water too

Cotton wool is a pain. It's messy and faffy and you'll be changing a lot of nappies . I used water wiped for first few weeks with DD1 then switched to normal wipes with no problem. I'll be doing the same with DD2 when she arrives (on friday!)

I was completely blasé about it, only took water wipes into hospital with DC 3, and within 24hours she had awful nappy rash and I had to ask the midwives for cotton wool.

We have had no problems with even johnsons wipes (work of the devil apparently!), but we use washable wipes as we use cloth nappies, and they are WAY more effective at wiping off poo! Need 4 washable wipes max where I would need at least double that in disposable wipes. They just smear!

We started off with cotton wool and water but by Christ it's hard work shifting meconium with cotton wool! Switched to Water Wipes after a couple of days and then to Pampers Sensitive for a bit (just because we'd been bought some in a gift set).

Reusable wipes are great though. We use Cheeky Wipes. If we have another baby I don't know if I'd use cloth nappies from the start but I'd definitely use reusable wipes, I imagine they're much better at dealing with newborn poo than disposable wipes!

I had a pot of vaseline in my hosp bag which my DH used for first nappy changes to make black poo issue easy to deal with.

Used cotton wool and water for about 4 days then sh*t got real and pampers sensitive ever since.

Nappy cream we use bepanthem.

I never once used water and cotton wool on DD (PFB)! Used Asda sensitive wipes from birth

We used water wipes for the first month then switched to aldi wipes.

If your lo gets nappy rash the best stuff to use is metanium (sp?) cream

I use Pampers wipes from day 1 and DD was absolutely fine. I found that cotton wool and water was much more abrasive than the wipes!!

I took water wipes to the hospital and had them in my changing bag but at home we used cheeky wipes washable wipes.

Will do the same with this one when she arrives!
