Gaviscon has stopped working....

Woe betide me...
Transverse baby, 35.5 weeks, heartburn utterly horrendous. I started by drinking milk till that didn't work any more, switched to Gavisvon a few weeks ago and now for the last day it isn't touching the burn either.

I'm so miserable with the pain, and lack of sleep, of it. Any suggestions would be very, very welcome

I had this when I was pregnant too, it's horrible! My GP prescribed some tablets, can't remember what they're called but they really worked and we're the only thing that did. I wished I'd gone a lot sooner! Go and see your Dr :)

Go and see your gp. They may be able to prescribe you something better than gaviscon. Heartburn is awful I know (lack of sleep from 8 week old Velcro baby is worse )

assuming you've already tried sleeping a bit more upright ?

Yes I'm propped up on three enormous pillows, can't really sleep though at this angle as baby is wedged so high.

Sympathies with Velcro baby, this is my 3dc (no heartburn with the others), but DD2 was a Velcro baby. The only way I got sleep was to hand myself over and co-sleep, baby wear etc and not stress about it. Just to let it wash over me. But it's hard with no break to pee/have a shower etc!

Do you think my nurse could get me a prescription? I have to see her tomorrow for whooping cough jab anyway

Give up wheat. It was the only thing that worked for me with all 4 pregnancies. I only ever got it back (big style!!) when I went off course and had cake, bread, pizza, pasta. Being wheat free knocked it on the head completely though

My midwife prescribed ranitidine, I've never been so happy in my life. I take it morning and night and it means I can eat and sleep. Occasionally have to top up with rennies but it's so much better than my other pregnancies.

I just called my mw and she arranged for me to collect a prescription.

Are you sure it is heartburn & not epigastric pain?

I'm high risk for PE as I've had it twice so my midwife team are very hot off the mark, clear so far but if I ever have high bp I'm packed off for blood tests, so hoping it isn't epigastric pain!

I missed the GP today so hopefully can get a prescription for Monday. Just need to get through the next few nights, which are the absolute worst.

Why not go wheat free over the weekend to see if that helps? My Gp friend told me to try it and it worked for me

Think it was Zantac my friend got which is ranitidine.

Thanks for the drug recommendation, great to know what to ask for. I didn't realise anything could be prescribed before I wrote this post. Do the drugs actually stop so much acid being produced? As opposed to Gaviscon which creates a barrier.

Omeprazole should prevent symptoms, ranitidine (Zantac) will abate.
I had a breech baby, chronic heartburn which I was often in tears.
Both above tablets saved me!
Still, your symptoms should subside in s few weeks

3 pregnancies mainly ok with gaviscon but this to me from 33 weeks not sleeping, waking up with acid in throat etc. Ranitidine has been fantastic. Was prescribed by consultant but you can get over the counter.
Speak to pharmacist tomorrow.

Currently unable to sleep as I feel so sick from the dreaded heart burn. Going to book a GP appointment Monday. It's awful, I feel for everyone else suffering too
