hair dye in pregnancy???

I'm 25 weeks pregnant, I'm due to get my hair cut tomorrow and I want to dye it.
I want to have blonde foils (my hair is brown).
Is that safe?

I think only natural dye is safe...

Had mine done when I was 12 weeks and was told it is perfectly safe.

keep natural - aveda highlights or henna

I've done quite a bit of research on this and most places say that it is negligable... but I don't know...

Had mine done at around 30 weeks and the colourist who did them was also 30 weeks pregnant. She didn't seem concerned.

I think in the NHS book it says that most likely safe but check with your hairdresser!
Oh, like the 16 year old creative-type will be gened (sp?) up on the latest scientific data re babies in the womb????!!!!

I think the advice not to dye your hair in pregnancy probably harks back to the days of harsh chemicals. According to my midwife and my hairdresser foils are perfectly OK - the colour doesn't even touch your scalp so there's no possibility of it being absorbed into your bloodstream. A lot of salons these days also offer 'organic' products which contain less chemicals than some of the more standard products - although if you're going lighter there will always be a certain percentage of peroxide.

I'm 30 weeks and have had my highlights done 3 times since I fell pregnant - I think you can feel bad enough about yourself in pregnancy as it is: what's wrong with a boost to your self-image? There is negligible risk in having your hair professionally coloured and I am not going to walk about with inches of regrowth unnecessarily!

LOL, Poppynic - good point! The crap they talk when trying to sell you overpriced conditioners should indicate just how scientifically literate they are....

Agree with current. Think it's only full head hair dye which it's best to avoid as some of the chemicals can be absorbed through the scalp.

I believe highlights (including foils) are fine.

cath21 i am a hairdresser,it is perfectly fine to have foils at any stage in pregnancy it is only recommended that you do not go for full head colours or any other sort of colour which will come into contact with your scalp, the reason for this is purely because of your hormones being secreted through the skin and having a non-desired reaction with the colour ie it turning green!

well, I think a degree in pharmacy would be a better qualification for such an assurance, no offence!
The crap that is in many soaps/cosmetics too is not ideal, IMO for an unborn foetus - try to keep everything as natural as possible if you can - neal's yard, some body shop stuff, stuff from health food shop etc
And the stuff does STILL stink - the difference in standard L'oreal type highlights compared to aveda ones is amazing, infuse those chemicals!

Would agree a lot of the hair dye concerns is re old style harsh chemicals which sit and develop on the scalp.

A girl has to have some fun....
