I'm 17 weeks and still no discernible bump... I'm starting to worry, is this normal?? I've put on weight, but just look fat, not pregnant! Shouldn't I be showing by now? Probably worrying too much...

Hi,

I didn't show with my fist prgnancy till about 21 weeks. Its fine. Make the most of wearing normal clothes!!!!

steffy1 · 18/12/2006 10:44

with my first baby i didnt show so other people could notice for at least 23 weeks!

i just enjoyed still feeling slim!

dont worry

fortyplus · 18/12/2006 10:45

I hate you!

It's perfectly normal - you're just lucky to have such strong tummy muscles. I have a friend who is a 6' tall personal fitness trainer and when she was having her second her stomach didn't get as big as my (unpregnant) one till she was 8.5 months!

SchneeBallFight · 18/12/2006 10:52

I didnt look pregnant until I was about 7 months gone but I was a fatty to begin with! I lost weight elsewhere and was wearing my normal jeans at 30 weeks!

SchneeBallFight · 18/12/2006 10:53

My DS was 8lbs 1oz too so not tiny!

PizPizPiz · 18/12/2006 11:21

I hate you too ! This is my 2nd pg and I started to show at week 8 !! , MUCH earlier than the 1st time round.

DeckthehallswithboughsofhollyL · 18/12/2006 11:41

I didn't start to show until I was 8 months and panicked like you. When born, DD was 7lb 10

spinasnowflake · 18/12/2006 11:43

I was a size 8 and not very tall(so not much space for a baby to hide!) before first pg and didn't look pg until at least 24 weeks.Just a bit chubby from about 12 weeks!

This pg (no 2) I started to show at about 8 weeks (and I was better "padded" to begin with.)

Don't worry about lack of bump(but I do recognise the desire to have a "bump" espesh if you're feeling out of shape!)

Respect to your tummy muscles!!

spinasnowflake · 18/12/2006 11:45

I'm not any taller BTW . DS1 was 3.8kg so not smaller

small not smaller Must preview more

Anglaise1 · 18/12/2006 11:49

I'm over 6.5 months pregnant and don't look very pregnant at all - my fundal height measurement is about that of 4.5 months. I was the same with DD, who weighed 8lb11oz at birth. It just doesn't show very much with me and I only put on the minimum amount of weight - which is great as it all goes when the baby is born! Everyone is different! As long as the baby is growing, it's OK.

LittleSarah · 18/12/2006 12:08

I hardly looked pregnant most of my pregnancy and had to go in for two late scans because of my size. I have a pic of me 7 months gone and you could only tell because I was wearing a tight t-shirt.

Honestly I kept waiting to grow out of my clothes and buy lots of maternity stuff but it never really happened, i got a few bits but I could have managed without.

incy · 18/12/2006 13:08

I was 6 months last pregnancy before I told work colleages and everyone was totally shocked ! The day I gave birth I was wearing a pair of size 10 trousers and top.

This time I'm over 4 months and again nobody has guessed - even when I wore a lycra wrap dress to Christmas meal last week !! I am normally a size 8 and 5ft 5 so you think it would be noticeable !

People do like to worry you - my boss who does know keeps asking if everything is alright. I got quite panicked last time because I kept being told something must be wrong but gave birth to a healthy 7ib boy - and he is massive now (strangers actually comment on how on earth he ever fitted !)

I think your shape Depends on fluid around baby, stomach muscles, how you carry etc.

Obviously go to any checks for peace of mind but rest assured it is quite normal - the only problem is that if you are like me you will never find maternity clothes to fit so just buy the next size up !

LIZS · 18/12/2006 13:11

1st time round most people at work didn't realise until I was well over 6 months. didn';wear maternity stuff until then ! 9 years on, 2kids , and I still look 6 months +

FrostytheSnowman · 18/12/2006 15:11

With my 2nd pregnancy I put on 2 stone and am only 5ft tall so at 13 stone+ and a bump I thought it would be obvious I was PG. Er, no! I wondered why none of my customers congratulated me or bought me gifts like they did my colleague due a month before me. When DD2 was born people asked who she belonged to as no-one had realised I was PG-even the window cleaner was shocked. All I can say is that I must have looked really, really fat. DD2 was only 6lb 3oz so please don't worry. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

bubsagrub · 18/12/2006 15:58

THe baby could be currently sitting in a backward leaning position and so you're not necessarily seeing a bump for that reason too - have you had a scan yet?

PeachyIsNowAChristmasFruit · 18/12/2006 17:10

With my ds1, I was still in normal coats at term! And nobody could tell I was pg, the freezer delivery chap got really huffy at 38 weeks because I wouldn't help him with our new chest freezer.

So I wouldn't worry, just raise with MW if you'res till not happy

3andnomorethechrimbobimbo · 18/12/2006 22:29

es....didn't show properly until 6 weeks before due, but then just grew FAST!!!!
MS bump grew slowly but surely...but at 20 weeks I remember just looking a bit bigger then normal but not really having a proper bump!
With Ys until 18 weeks people would be surprised to find out I was pg,never mind how far along, by 26 weeks people cnstantly asked me if I was due ratehr soon as my bump had just appeared out of nowhere and just grew HUGE!

MKGnearlyimmaculateconception · 18/12/2006 22:52

I didn't have a bump until I was about 6.5 months with my last pregnancy. It literallu happend over night though. I went to bed with no bump and woke up with a bump and stretch marks. What a way to start the day.

Flumpytigger · 19/12/2006 11:19

I'm new to the forum - Hello everyone!

I'm 18 weeks pregnant, nearly 19 weeks and I too have no obvious bump. I think I look like I've eaten too many pies and have a pot belly!

I've also only just starting putting on weight and literally only about 2 or 3 pounds in about 1-2 weeks. Orginally I actually lost weight, although I think this might have been down to an improved diet and morning sickness!

My sister who is 6 weeks ahead of me looked a lot more pregnant at 18 weeks than I did and she could even feel the baby doing a re-furb on her belly at that stage too! So I'm a bit gutted that I can't feel anything either

But Phoebebaby you are not alone!!

xxx

Phoebebaby · 19/12/2006 13:40

Well I'll consider myself reassured and not alone! Seeing the midwife tomorrow again actually so will see what she says. My mum reckons as it's a girl it'll be less 'bumpy' anyway! I'm a first timer worrier I guess!

I didn't show with DD until nearly 6 months, but boy did I make up for it in the last 3! Ended up looking something like a Tellytubby (my green work uniform didn't help!)

Lwatkins · 19/12/2006 14:40

I'll be 18 weeks this sunday and if i hadn't told you i was pregnant you wouldn't guess it. I just have what looks like a bit of a pot belly, but no proper baby bump yet. I'm 5'2 and only weigh 8 and a half stone now, before i was pregnant this is what i weighed! So have not put on any weight and am nearly 4 and a half months pg! This is probably due to the fact that my morning sickness was very bad till i was 12 weeks and don't eat that much now as am never hungry! Strange thing is though, am starting to find it hard to get into my size 8/10 clothes, which i find really weird! I call this my clothing limbo, cant fit into normal clothes, and my maternity clothes are far too big still! It's no fun!
All is not lost though, it is christmas after all. Bring on the turkey!

Anglaise1 · 19/12/2006 16:39

Weight gain should be 2 - 5lbs during the first trimester then around 1lb a week in 2nd and 3rd. Most baby growth doesn't occur until wk 23/24 so it is quite normal not to show earlier, especially if it is your first.
