Washing baby clothes

Should I wash all the clothes/blankets etc I've got for the baby? If so, when? And what brands should I use. Currently I use bold 2&1, fairy fabric softener (I know!) and I generally throw in those bead things as well Blush Should I be using non bio or bio?

Re: no fabric softener I'm just not going to use it because I don't use it usually...maybe it depends on whether you live in a hard/soft water area whether people tend to use it.

The only negative I'm aware of with fabric softener is it stops the stuff that should be absorbent (towels etc) being so as it coats the fibres. It's also an added expense that doesn't make anything actually cleaner. I'm sure there will be someone along shortly with more knowledge however!

I washed everything first in fairy but I'm very aware of skin problems, having had eczema myself.

Stella-I found the baby cycle brilliant for poo stained baby clothes brings them out them right out then line dry in the sun if you can. I don't use it now DD is almost two but it saved alot of stuff that otherwise would have been binned.

I washed everything we had that was new, which wasnt much due to being unsure of sizes.

My baby did react to washing powder (bold) so we used Surcare.

I would never risk it again with a newborn, the rash was awful and i felt really bad Sad

BathshebaDarkstone · 31/12/2015 18:36

I didn't prewash anything, I used non-bio and gentle fabric conditioner.

Eminado · 31/12/2015 18:40

Sorry by risk it i meant i would never risk using a perfumed / ordinary washing powder on a newborn.

Sorry i wasn't clear.

I washed everything first and just used fairy powder until they were a few years old. Never used fabric softener. Good decision as dc1 reacted to certain things when small.

Now they are all in double figures and I use Persil powder for whites, whatever is in offer for coloured and dettox laundry cleanser (it's a liquid) for smelly shirts and PE kits.

First baby washed and ironed everything first.

Second baby straight from the wrapper - The few things that aren't hand me downs!

Jw35 · 31/12/2015 22:04

I don't wash new clothes but I use non bio for the first year.

dementedpixie · 31/12/2015 22:09

I only used non bio for the first few weeks and then switched back to bio. I always use softener too

Didn't bother washing anything and LO has come to no harm. This meant I could leave the tags on everything not yet worn and was able to swap stuff for bigger sizes etc if I received multiples of the same item. I had so many 3-6 baby grows that they would never have gotten worn if I hadn't traded some for a bigger size.
